Study predicts that 2025 will redefine IoT connectivity

AEseye, world leader in IoT connectivity solutions, released its awaitedIoT Forecast Report 2025, together with the 50th episode of your podcast IoT Leaders. Now in its 6th year, the annual report, written by the CEO of Eseye, Nick Earle, and by the co-founder and CTO, Ian Marsden, identify three key trends that will significantly transform the IoT and telecommunications landscape

The future of IoT is not a static scenario; it is a dynamic environment driven by flexibility, innovation and convergence. The year 2025 will mark a crucial moment in the evolution of IoT, says Nick Earle, CEO of Eseye. For MNOs to thrive in IoT, we believe that they should embrace the sharing of IoT connectivity, what will create a much more viable economic model. NB-IoT will fall out of use in most regions due to its isolated infrastructure and limited revenue potential, while AIoT will be used more and will play a crucial role in the intelligent optimization of connectivity between devices and networks.Check out the main trends for 2025:

MNOs must evolve if they want to maintain control of the market

Traditional IoT platforms lack the flexibility to support the global multi-operator connectivity of eUICCs (Embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Cards) for corporate clients. This creates an urgent need for MNOs to adopt new solutions, like AnyNet from Eseye, that offers operators a way to adjust customer IoT devices to stay 'on the network' across more than 16 major mobile networks, in addition to providing access to 800 additional networks via roaming. Everything orchestrated through a cloud SaaS platform solution, customizable and low cost. We will see a new generation of IoT platforms for MNOs that eliminate roaming issues and enable shared adjustments and global management of eSIMs. This will allow operators to be competitive and offer flexible global connectivity solutions, stable and highly scalable, while maintaining their important relationship with existing customers, said Ian Marsden, CTO of Eseye

NB-IoT is declining as MNOs seek more scalable solutions

Positioned as a low-cost, low-power connectivity solution, NB-IoT is losing strength currently due to low global adoption, to the rising high costs of infrastructure and the difficulties of compatibility with modems. "Despite its technical advantages", the NB-IoT has not reached the critical mass needed to sustain the infrastructure to keep it alive. With major operators like AT&T discontinuing support in 2025, we believe that more MNOs should follow the example, preferring LTE and 5G, because they are more versatile, economically viable and widely adopted, continued Marsden

In Brazil, the technologies that cover large areas with low power (LPWA –Low Power Wide Area, like Sigfox, LoRa, LTE -M/CAT-M e NB-IoT estão presentes em diversas proporções, varying according to operators and cities. "Currently, NB-IoT covers almost all Brazilian cities thanks to the vigorous work of the three main national operators, Live, TIM and Claro. From 5.570 Brazilian municipalities, 5.497 have NB-IoT coverage, what corresponds to 99,8% of the Brazilian population. The challenge, now, is to make the market really use this technology, affirmsAna Carolina Bussab, General Director of Eseye Brazil

The rise of AIoT – the true game changer for IoT connectivity

The convergence between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and IoT, known as AIoT, will rewrite the IoT connectivity manual in three critical areas: device processing, integration between different systems (application layer) and integration between different networks (network layer). Companies and MNOs will gain new skills: preventive maintenance that prevents failures before they occur, dynamic network management that adapts to changing conditions and on-site decision-making that reduces latency and improves reliability, explained Marsden

An example of an IoT solution that already uses AI to enable real-time connectivity management is Eseye's AnyNet SMARTconnect™ smart connectivity software, that allows devices to respond intuitively to connectivity issues, optimizing, thus, your performance

A Future Shaped by Flexibility, Innovation and Convergence

Eseye's forecasts for 2025 reflect a rapidly evolving IoT ecosystem, driven by the need for greater flexibility, economic sustainability and technological convergence. Earle concluded: "The market is demanding smart solutions, scalable and future-proof. Whether through the adoption of a shared connectivity model by MNOs, due to companies distancing themselves from NB-IoT or the rise of AIoT — the ability to adapt is the key. Eseye takes pride in being at the forefront of these changes, continuing to provide innovative connectivity solutions that empower MNOs and businesses to deploy IoT confidently at a global scale.”
