Companies face resistance in AI adoption and seek to overcome cultural barriers

Artificial intelligence (AI) has consolidated as one of the biggest technological revolutions of recent years. According to the study “IAI Jobs Barometer 2024”, conducted by PwC in 15 countries, 73% of CEOs believe that the technology will profoundly impact their operations in the coming years, but only 27% have already implemented it on a large scale. A survey of Data-Makers, in partnership with the CDN held in the country, identifies cultural resistance as the biggest obstacle in this adoption, with 69% of CEOs and C-Levels interviewed rejecting the use of technology.

For Sylvestre Mergulhão, founder and CEO of Impulso, resistance to change is natural in any disruptive process. “With AI, it intensifies by the lack of understanding about how technology can complement and optimize human work rather than replace it”, he points out. To contextualize, a study by Adecco reinforces this view, revealing that although 70% of workers already use AI tools, many have not received adequate guidance or training from their leaders.

Effective implementation of AI requires more than the adoption of new technological tools. According to PwC's study on analytical transformation, companies that combine this technology with clear strategies for capacity building and cultural change overcome internal resistance and achieve significant results. These organizations observe up to 40% of increased productivity and reduced operational errors. “A AI is not only a tool, but a lever for organizational transformation. Implemented correctly, it improves efficiency and creates new opportunities for innovation and growth.”, says Mergulhao.

However, full acceptance of AI requires clear communication, highlighting how technology can benefit employees and become an ally.Over-investment in capacity building is also crucial.“Overcoming resistance to this solution requires a profound cultural shift, which begins with leadership and involves empowering employees”, explains Mergulhao. “As you engage teams in the digital transformation process, showing how artificial intelligence can leverage your skills, all of this opposition turns into buy-in.”

Companies that invest in training programs focused on AI improve their internal performance and strengthen their competitive position.Mergulhao concludes by saying that “a implementation of the solution is one of the greatest opportunities for modernization of the corporate sector. However, adaptation involves not only technology, but also management of organizational changes

Resistance to AI is not an insurmountable obstacle, but it does require a strategic approach, one that includes education, effective communication, and cultural adaptation. Companies that overcome these challenges will be better positioned to harness the benefits of technology and excel as innovation leaders in the marketplace.
