In development, the National Logistics Plan 2050 and the quality of the roads were highlights at EXPOLOG 2024

During panel “Multimodality and National Logistics Plan 2050”2024, at EXPOLOG, experts discussed the challenges and opportunities for transport infrastructure in Brazil.Mediated by Mario Povia, president director of the Brazilian Institute of Infrastructure (IBI), the meeting addressed crucial topics such as energy transition, tax reform and multimodal connectivity.

“A country with the territorial extension of Brazil must necessarily advance in multimodality. This is of fundamental importance, especially due to the large distances and high volumes of cargo, especially agribusiness and mining. Therefore, it is essential to integrate the road and rail modes, in addition to including maritime transport in the context of exports”, said Marcelo Maranhao, president of the Union of Cargo Transport and Logistics Companies of the State of Ceara and institutional director of FETRANSLOG-NE.

Data presented by the National Transport Confederation (CNT) exposed a worrying scenario: only 14% of federal roads are classified as good or optimal. This scenario contributes to high operating costs in road transport, which in Ceara reach up to 40%. The survey, which analyzed 141,853 km of highways, highlighted the superior performance of roads granted compared to public roads, a result of greater investments per kilometer.

Among the good news, the highlight was the investment of R$ 3.6 billion for the completion of the Transnordestina Railway, a strategic work to expand access to the Cearan ports and boost regional competitiveness. The Secretary of Infrastructure of Ceara, Helio Winston Leitao, highlighted the advantages of the state, including legal security, fiscal balance and political stability.

Multimodality was pointed out as essential to reduce road dependence. Daniel Rose, chief executive officer of APM Terminals Pecem, emphasized the importance of more sustainable solutions, such as strengthening waterway transport, expanding cabotage and investing in railways. The transition to clean energy was also cited as a pillar of Brazilian neo-industrialization.

Another key point of the debate was the National Logistics Plan 2050, under development by INFRA S.A. As evolution of the current National Logistics Plan 2035, it seeks to integrate land, airport, waterway and port modes.

The panel highlighted the critical challenges of logistics infrastructure, but also pointed out viable solutions. With the strategic application of resources and the continuity of structural reforms, Brazil can transform its transport matrix, reducing costs and increasing efficiency in the sector.
