1-What inspired you to address topics such as grief, rejection and hope in the relationship between father and son in “O son that I did not love”?
Jhonatas Nilson The inspiration came from several questions that came to me about the complexities of a possible relationship between an absent father and a son in search of acceptance. For a while, I hesitated to start this story for fear of not being able to complete it due to the emotional weight that surrounds it. But, by allowing me to explore it, I delved deep into the feelings, especially those of mourning and rejection 1 I even cried several times in the writing process. Today, I am immensely happy to have moved on and to see how readers connected with this narrative that so marked me.
2-What psychological elements do you incorporate into the narrative to explore the impact of rejection and family reconciliation?
J.N: As a psychologist, I always wonder how I can approach real and intense topics about the human emotional The son I did not loveeach interaction between the protagonists reveals layers of pain, search for approval and the defense mechanisms that we develop when we feel rejected.Through these elements, I wanted to show that new beginnings are possible not only by love, but by the willingness to change from the inside out.
3- How does the character Vincenzo deal with the need to overcome the grudge and build an affective relationship with his son Giovanni? What is the message you intend to convey with this to readers?
J.N: Initially, Vincenzo deals very badly with this need and comes to act extremely toxic with his son. During the writing, I felt closely the internal struggle he hangs with his pains and resentments. However, it was exciting to lead him to self-reflection and make him realize that our pains do not justify causing suffering to others.Through this journey, I wanted to convey that emotional restarts are possible, provided we have the courage to face our own pain patterns.
4- In your opinion, what makes the journey of a parent and child in search of reconciliation relevant for readers facing family conflicts?
J.N: I believe that family conflicts are as universal as grief and rejection. At some point, we are all forced to deal with disagreements with those we love. Bringing these themes to my work allows human reality to touch the reader through a hopeful perspective, offering a mirror of their own experiences and showing that even in the most difficult relationships, there is room for understanding and growth.
5-you are bestselling author, with over 60 published works. “The son I did not love” differs from your other productions?
J.N: I feel that this year I have challenged myself in many aspects of my literary career, exploring themes that are not so common for me. The Son I Didn't Love it exemplifies this phase of experimentation, because although I have addressed family traumas before, it was never exactly as a central theme. Normally, I write romantic novels, but creating a story totally focused on family love was a magical and enriching experience.
6- With more than 30 thousand followers on Instagram, how do you see the importance of writers being on social networks? How can the virtual environment be allied to literary production?
J.N: Social networks allow the reader to feel more connected with the author. As a fan of many writers, I confess that I love to follow their routines and lifestyles. In addition, with the current technological tools, the virtual medium opens doors to disseminate the works to a wider audience. Today, my books reach people who may never know them without the digital presence. Networks have become an ally in building and expanding a readership base, no doubt.
