3 Security measures to reduce cyber threats

Brazilian companies are still exposed to the risk of hacking attacks, with an increase in occurrences. According to Check Point Software's Threat Intelligence Report, in the second quarter of this year, the country registered an increase of 67% in cyber attacks, totaling 2,754 cases per week, compared to the same period of the previous year. The percentage increase is 7%, compared to the second quarter of 2023, when the weekly number of attacks on Brazilian companies was 1,645.

In the last six months (between February and July this year), an organization in Brazil was attacked on average 2,615 times a week, against 1,587 attacks on companies worldwide.

“Hacking attacks, associated with other causes, such as software and hardware problems, eventual bugs, among other cases, may be responsible for causing damage such as total or partial loss of data and applications, which can seriously compromise the system and the continuity of the” business, reveals Thiago Tanaka, director of Cybersecurity at TIVIT, a Brazilian multinational that connects technology to a better world.

According to Tanaka, the best alternative to reduce the chances of attacks is through the adoption of preventive measures. Check out 3 tips below:

  1. Having a well-structured security plan that is supported by the board and the company board. Even if the cyber area has a robust planning, it may not be enough without the support needed to implement it.
  1. Study and know the infrastructure through a good security assessment, which will point out all points of vulnerability, indicate which tools and software should be implemented or updated and possible process changes to make the environment more solid.
  1. Implement an awareness plan for employees so that they do not fall into scams that can put the company's network at risk. Campaigns and messages with this bias need to be reinforced constantly to help support the idea of surveillance.

“These actions, when well applied, help significantly reduce the chances of problems with security threat events. However, if the organization still goes through some unforeseen attack situation, it is recommended to activate the Disaster Recovery Plan (Disaster Recovery), which is based on the responsiveness to solve problems that affect operations. This procedure allows the company to isolate the problem, recover its environments and systems and upload backups more quickly, thus being able to resume activities as quickly as possible”, he adds.

For the director of Cybersecurity, although many companies make large investments in cybersecurity structures, it is important to understand what the real gaps in technology are, in addition to creating processes and having professionals able to deal with all stages of disaster situations. “It is recommended to avoid spending in a unstructured and unplanned way with security tools. The triad formed by technologies, processes and people is fundamental to the effectiveness of the business”, concludes Thiago Tanaka.

More than 60% of Brazilians have already suffered attempted Internet scams, says Koin survey

In a new survey on the scenario of virtual scams and fraud, made by Koin, fintech specialized in Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) and in fraud prevention in e-commerce, the numbers show that the vulnerability of consumers is still a threat when buying over the Internet. According to the survey, 62,4% of Brazilians have already suffered some attempt of virtual scam, most of them (41,8%) on shopping sites.

WhatsApp frauds are also relevant, and represent 20.6% of attempts, while the Pix scam was mentioned by 18.6% of respondents.Data theft (so-called “phishing” was the threat cited by 13.9% of respondents, while 5.2% of consumers mentioned having experienced attempted password theft.

Money lost

Most victims reported having suffered damage between R$ 500 and R$ 1 thousand (47,6%), with a second significant group losing values in the house of R$ 50 and 100 (19%). Already 15,5% of respondents said they were defrauded in values above R$ 2 thousand; 10,7% lost between R$ 1 thousand and R$ 1,500. Only 7,111111T consumers reported not having suffered financial loss.

Where the scams happen

The survey also showed that the absolute majority (92.3%) of the coup attempts occurred through mobile devices, mainly mobile phones. Another relevant aspect is that 64.3% of the victims did not register a police report after suffering the threat, indicating a possible lack of confidence in solving the problem or lack of knowledge about the importance of this record.

“The numbers of our survey reveal that the issue of fraud and virtual scams is a reality in the lives of Brazilians and that can cause damage to both the consumer and the shopkeeper, who also suffers financial impacts due to virtual crimes,”, highlights Juana Angelim, Chief Operating Officer of Koin. “Therefore, more and more, it is necessary for companies to reinforce their online sales with robust anti-fraud systems” executivea.Only in 2023, Koin avoided R$ 240 million in fraud and 120 thousand fraudulent transactions.

The survey considered the experience of 350 consumers from all regions of Brazil in August, with most respondents from the Southeast (43.1%), followed by the Northeast (18.6%). The age group of participants also showed a homogeneous distribution: from 35 to 44 years (27.3%), 45 to 54 years (23.5%) and 55 to 64 years (22.5%).

Average Freight Price Per Kilometer Round Rises to R$ 6.33 in July, Points Edenred Repom

The Edenred Repom Freight Index (IFR) revealed that the average freight price per kilometer traveled reached R$ 6.33 in July, registering an increase of 0.31% compared to June. This increase reflects the update of the minimum freight floors of road freight transport, carried out by the National Agency for Land Transport (ANTT) in mid-July.“The adjustment in the table did not significantly impact the value of freight in July, but a more pronounced influence on prices of August” is expected, says Viniciosandes, Director of Edenredom Repredom.

In addition to the readjustment in the freight table, the price of diesel also contributed to the rise.Data from the Edenred Ticket Log Price Index (IPTL) indicate that the average price of the liter of ordinary diesel reached R$ 6.04 and diesel S-10 to R$ 6.17 in July, both with an increase of 0.33% compared to the first half of the month. Diesel represents about 40% of the freight cost.

Another factor that maintains the upward trend in the freight price is the heating of the construction market. According to the July 2024 report of the economics committee of the Brazilian Chamber of the Construction Industry (CBIC) and the National Industrial Learning Service (SENAI), the demand for transport in the construction segment has increased due to the flow of raw materials. Construction costs have remained high since January 2020, showing increases above the official inflation of the country.

“In addition to the readjustment in the table, the increase in the price of diesel and the high construction costs maintain the upward trend in the freight price, recorded since May of this year, and this trend may continue in the coming months”, concludes Fernandes.

IFR is an index that measures the average freight price and its composition, based on 8 million annual freight and toll voucher transactions administered by Edenred Repom. Edenred Repom, a brand of the Mobility business line of Edenred Brasil, is a leader in the freight and toll voucher payment segment, with 30 years of experience and more than 1 million truck drivers served throughout Brazil.

5 Most Common Cybersecurity Threats for Businesses Today and How to Avoid Them

The digital age has transformed the way people live and work, bringing with it a host of innovations and conveniences to everyday life. However, as technology evolves, so too has the sophistication of digital security threats and the frequency of cyberattacks targeting businesses.

According to a survey by Check Point Research, the number of cyberattacks worldwide increased in the second quarter of 2024. There were 1,636 hacker attacks per week, an increase of 30% compared to the same period in 2023.

Considering the alarming scenario and aiming to support companies in identifying the main cyber threats of today, Denis Riviello, head of cybersecurity at CG One, a technology company focused on information security, network protection, and integrated risk management, listed the five most common attacks and explains how organizations should act to prevent them.

1. Phishing
Phishing remains one of the most common and dangerous forms of cyberattack. The method involves sending fraudulent messages disguised as legitimate communications, usually via email, to trick the recipient into revealing sensitive information, such as passwords and banking details.

According to the CG One expert, it's important to be wary of suspicious links and attachments, as well as unsolicited messages, especially if they come from unknown contacts. "Today, phishing scams are increasingly elaborate and well-crafted. Very attractive offers or requests made on behalf of legitimate organizations can be a strategy to lure victims to fake websites where sensitive company data can be stolen," he warns.

2. Malware
Malware, or malicious software, is a broad category that includes viruses and other forms of software designed to damage systems, steal data, or compromise organizational security. As threats become more sophisticated and technologically advanced, it has become more difficult to detect and neutralize attacks without multi-factor investment in cybersecurity.

For Riviello, it's essential to adopt regular preventative measures, including installing antivirus software and performing regular backups. "Tools like firewalls, antivirus software, extensions, and other solutions act as a fundamental barrier to preventing companies' systems from being infected by malware and other types of cyberattacks," the executive states.

3. Ransomware
Ransomware is a specific type of malware that encrypts company files and typically demands a ransom to unlock them. Attacks of this type can have devastating consequences for companies, paralyzing business operations and causing significant financial losses. Recently, the method has grown in popularity, with cybercriminals refining their techniques to maximize impact and increase the chances of receiving payment.

To protect companies against a ransomware attack, it's essential to adopt a multifaceted approach, which includes implementing robust backup systems and rigorously applying security updates. "Furthermore, network segmentation and the use of advanced threat detection and response solutions can significantly mitigate the risk and limit the impact of a potential attack," advises the CG One expert.

4. Deep Fakes
Deepfakes are a digital manipulation technique that uses artificial intelligence to create fake videos, audio, and images that appear extremely real. The technology can replace a person's face in images, modify a voice to imitate someone, or even create entire videos of events that never happened. This manipulated content has been frequently used to deceive people, spread misinformation, and commit financial fraud against companies around the world.

The expert is categorical about the need for a solid security policy to ensure organizations' protection against such a sophisticated form of cyberattack. "Employee education and awareness are crucial. It's essential that everyone in the organization recognizes the signs of potential deep fakes and knows how to react appropriately. Only the combination of technology and human awareness guarantees an effective defense against the increasingly sophisticated threats of deep fakes," he explains.

5. Social Engineering
Social engineering is a manipulative technique that exploits human error to obtain private information, access, or financial advantages through actions that compromise a company's security. By exploiting the trust, fear, or urgency of unsuspecting users, attackers can trick victims into providing sensitive data or carrying out fraudulent transactions without any suspicion. This approach relies not only on technology, but primarily on a deep understanding of human behavior.

Investing in raising awareness among leaders and employees through security training and workshops is the primary tool for preventing scams and attacks that use social engineering. However, Riviello points out two practices that can be applied spontaneously to employees' daily lives: "Under no circumstances should you provide personal or corporate information to unexpected requests, even if they appear legitimate. Always confirm the identity of the person requesting the data, especially if the request is urgent or unusual," concludes the cybersecurity expert.

App connects travelers to local residents to exchange experiences

Brazilian startup Pertalks, which launched an innovative solution to promote face-to-face meetings in hotels, bars, restaurants and cafes, connecting people with shared interests, is now available for download in iOS and Android stores. The platform aims to balance digital communication with authentic and meaningful social interactions, and is available in any city in the world.

Making friends outside the home region can be challenging for many, research by InterNations, the largest exile community in the world, has already revealed that only 57% of foreigners find it easy to build new friendships abroad, while less than 45% claims it has managed to establish ties with local citizens. The purpose of the application is to create a community of travelers and residents who want to connect through common preferences, sharing experiences and practicing languages.

Pertalks works through an on-site check-in, possible thanks to the geolocation of the platform. The user filters his own interests and finds people in the establishment around him, open for interaction, and also offers resources for profiles to schedule meetings at later times, fostering the possibility of new friendships.

“The idea is to bring people together in meaningful and face-to-face social interactions, based on shared interests, knowledge and desire for interaction. We believe that the best connections happen in person, and our application was developed to facilitate these encounters in a simple and safe way”, he says Luis Quadros, founder and CEO of Pertalks.

Unlike virtual dating and friendship apps, Pertalks focuses on face-to-face meetings in the current place for the exchange of interests and has been selected for several innovation events, among them the Web Summit Rio, considered one of the largest in the segment.
