International Day for Safe Internet promotes debates on responsible use of the web

The International Day of the Safe Internet will be celebrated on February 11 and 12 of this year. The initiative, which brings together more than 180 countries, seeks to engage NGOs, public agencies, companies and several other actors in a debate on the safe, ethical and responsible use of the internet, focusing on privacy and protection of users.

Among the topics covered in the event's schedule are lectures on digital privacy, which guide on the risks of sharing personal information online; media education classes, which help identify and combat misinformation; and discussions on the impacts of technology on the emotional health of young people and adults.

“A security and good digital practices affect people of all ages and profiles. Disinformation and scams arising from the leakage of personal data, for example, are frequent challenges for adults and the elderly. Already children and adolescents are more vulnerable to improper exposure and cyberbullying. Therefore, it is essential to promote awareness for a safer internet for all”, says Dr. Patricia Peck, Digital Law specialist and CEO of Peck Advogados.

Advances and challenges

Brazil has advanced in the search for greater digital security.A reflection of this concern is the approval of Law 15,100/2025, which restricts the use of cell phones in public and private schools throughout the country and determines that teachers guide students on the responsible use of technology.

However, there is still a long way to go. “Digital education in Brazil needs to evolve significantly. The topic should be addressed not only in the school environment, but also in public spaces in general. Only with a more conscious population can we create a safe internet, allowing a healthy use of technology that is present at all times of our daily lives”, Peck points out.

Peck Institute for Digital Citizenship

The Peck Institute for Digital Citizenship also acts to make the internet safer. Secure Digital Family it offers podcasts, booklets and educational videos with tips and information to help family, children and educators protect their privacy in the digital environment.

In addition, the Institute promotes actions to combat bullying and cyberbullying. With lectures and activities in schools, it raises awareness among children and adolescents about the impacts of discrimination in the virtual environment.

Another highlight is the project Digital Citizenship, which has already benefited 1,600 students from public schools in the metropolitan region of Sao Paulo. The initiative is open to new institutions interested in promoting digital education and online citizenship.

In honor of International Day of the Safe Internet the IPCD will publish a booklet proposing a reflection on how young people are able to identify and understand their emotions in relation to the internet.
