DCC/UFMG promotes event in celebration of International Cybersecurity Day

The International Day of Information Security is celebrated on November 30. And to mark the date, the Department of Computer Science (DCC), the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) , will promote the DCC Security Day, on November 29. It will be a day of lectures, workshops and mini-courses on the topic cybersecurity for students and professionals in the sector. The event has the technical support of the Brazilian Computer Society and is carried out by the research group CCSC (Computational Security Science and Network Security).

There will also be the Alberto Santos-Dumont Challenge, a cybersecurity competition with mixed teams from Brazil and France using the Airbus Cyberrange. The activity will have 10 Brazilian participants and 10 French selected. The Santos-Dumont Challenge has the support of the Inria Center of the University of Lorraine, in France, in the organization.

The opening lecture is the result of a partnership between DCC and Google, will be themed “IA Safe and Security with AI” and will be taught by Alex Freire, director of engineering and leader of the Google Engineering Center in Sao Paulo. Freire is responsible for the development, on a global scale, of anti-abuse technologies and resources to promote the safety of people in the digital environment and ensure their privacy.

The closing will be with Raphael Machado, Chief Scientist of Clavis Information Security, who also supports the event, on “Vulnerabilities in Critical Systems”. Raphael Machado is a Doctor in Systems Engineering and Computing at Coppe & Alberto Luiz Coimbra Institute of Postgraduate and Engineering Research, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and professor at the Institute of Computing at the Fluminense Federal University.

Computer scientist Michele Nogueira, PhD in Computer Science from the University of Sorbonne, France, and professor at the DCC at UFMG is the organizer of the event and will give the lecture “Kick-off of the CNPq METIS project: Exact Women in Cybersecurity”. According to Michele Nogueira, despite the growing demand for professionals who provide data security and great employability in the sector, only 25% of cybersecurity jobs are occupied by women.

The computer scientist is at the forefront, coordinating the METIS Project, with the objective of encouraging women to join the cybersecurity industry.“Metis is the Greek Goddess of protection. Women have an intrinsic concern with protection; therefore, they bring different perspectives and necessary for building cybersecurity solutions”, explains Michele Nogueira.

The METIS Project, which will begin officially on the day of the event, has as its main objects the awareness of girls about the possibility of acting in cybersecurity from elementary school to higher education, the development of skills of these girls, the formation of mentoring network and strategic partnerships for them, the promotion of social inclusion by a highly demanded profession and with differentiated remuneration, as well as influencing the creation of public policies that promote incentives for girls to act in the area.
