Reconciling work and motherhood remains a challenge for many women. It is a challenging double journey, which in many moments seems impossible to balance. The challenge is even greater for those who undertake, because the care with the business becomes symbolically maternal and the rest time is even shorter. Who lives in the midst of this reality, recognizes that it is impossible to get right at all times, however, normalizing failures is still a dilemma.
This is because self-collection and social demands on motherhood remain intense. There is a cultural expectation that women are naturally multitasking, that they are always available and emotionally stable, even in the face of extreme fatigue and daily dilemmas.This constant pressure contributes to anxiety, guilt and physical and mental exhaustion. For many, the feeling is of guilt: “when I was working, I felt guilty of not being a mother and when I was exercising motherhood, I felt guilty of not working”, shares the entrepreneur and co-founder of Concrete Capital Mariana Menezes.
Mother of Lara, 4 years old, Mariana reflects on the reconciliation of occupations. “It is a process of self-knowledge. It is necessary to have calm, organization and flexibility to meet all demands and understand that despite all efforts, at times failures will happen. And that these failures do not define us either as professionals or as mothers”. In front of one of the main developers of the real estate and financial market, the businesswoman also defines that, although she values the work, the priority is always the daughter.
She recalls that when Lara was born, the company presented expressive expansion, which required her full-time presence.“A Capital Concrete was at the time of growth, and Lara with less than a year yet. In many moments, I really felt and believed that it was a limitation. This is a truth to this day, at times I really can not be present, because she needs my presence. This made me have a much lighter relationship today, not that it is easy. What I learned being a businesswoman and mother, is that today I know what my priority, I know the place where other people can do what I do, and other places where I do not.
The life of a mother and the trajectory of a businesswoman intersect especially when it comes to responsibility, leadership and resilience. In both spheres, it is necessary to make important decisions daily, deal with unforeseen events, take care of the development of others and remain emotionally present, even in the face of exhaustion. Being a mother is, in many ways, undertake 'invest time, love and energy in a project that one wishes to see grow safely and autonomously.
Similarly, leading a business requires delivery, planning and constant adaptation, also fundamental values in motherhood.
