President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) signed into law on Thursday (27) the law that establishes taxation on international purchases over US$ 50. The measure, nicknamed "the little shirts fee", is part of the law that created the Mover program, aimed at encouraging the decarbonization of the automotive sector
According to the government, a provisional measure will be issued to regulate the new fee. The law puts an end to the exemption that benefited large e-commerce companies like Shopee, Shein and Amazon
According to the new legislation, products with a value up to US$ 50 will be taxed at 20% on the purchase value. For items over US$ 50, the import tax will be 60%. However, there will be a discount on the taxation for products with values between US$ 50 and US$ 3.000
In addition to the taxation of international purchases, the law sanctioned by President Lula also creates the Mover program, which aims to encourage the decarbonization of the automotive sector. The text raises sustainability requirements for vehicles and encourages the production of new technologies in the area
Companies that join the Mover regime will be able to benefit from financial credits if they invest in research, technological development and production in Brazil
The implementation of this new law represents a significant change in the landscape of international e-commerce and the Brazilian automotive industry, with potential impacts for both consumers and companies in the affected sectors
