Scammers use the Labubu doll trend on Portuguese fraud sites

Kaspersky detected a proliferation of fraudulent platforms posing as legitimate resellers of Labubu dolls on illegitimate websites. The criminals incite fans with false offers to collect confidential financial information from buyers on scam sites in Portuguese, Spanish, Hungarian, and French, which imitate the visual identity of trusted resellers.

The Labubu dolls, created by Kasing Lung, have been captivating a global audience. The excitement of the "surprise box" and the chance to find rare editions, valued at up to $3,000, created a fertile ground for scammers to exploit the high demand.

Kaspersky identified scam sites in Portuguese, Spanish, Hungarian, and French that imitate the visual identity of trusted resellers, such as Pop Mart (the official reseller and creator of Labubu dolls). These fraudulent sites often offer tempting discounts or "exclusive editions" of the dolls to lure victims into entering bank card details or other personal information.

Portuguese website sells "original products imported from Japan" for R$ 47.90

For example, a website in Portuguese claims to be an "official Labubu store" and sells "original products imported from Japan" at a special offer of R$ 47.90. Another Spanish website claims to sell "original Labubu" and describes the story behind the creation of the dolls, offering various dolls at "special prices" ranging from $30 to $79.99.

I always like to reiterate the expression: "when the gift is too much, the saint suspects." We see offers with urgent discounts all the time, taking advantage of buyers' anxiety to, in this case, obtain rare figurines. These fraudulent platforms now appear in various languages, expanding their reach.", comments"Fabio Assolini, Director of the Kaspersky Global Research and Analysis Team for Latin America. "Fans are advised to purchase Labubu dolls only from verified resellers, such as the official Pop Mart channels, after verifying the authenticity of the website URL, and to avoid interacting with suspicious-looking sites..”

To protect yourself against these scams, Kaspersky recommends:

  • Buy only from official resellers:Buy only from authorized and verified resellers.
  • Check the website URL:Before making any purchase, ensure that the website URL is legitimate and does not contain typos or unusual characters.
  • Be wary of deals that seem too good to be true:Excessive discounts or "exclusive editions" on unknown websites are strong indicators of fraud.
  • Use security solutions:Keep robust security software on your devices to detect and block phishing and malware sites.
  • Never share personal or financial information on suspicious websites.Be cautious when entering credit card information or other sensitive data.
