Father's Day: Asaas survey reveals significant increase in fraud attempts in 2024

The latest survey from the fraud prevention department of Asaas, financial institution and complete digital account for businesses, reveals a significant increase in fraud attempts during Father's Day 2024. The research, carried out on the database of more than 160 thousand clients of the financial institution, brings a sampling of the period when people potentially start shopping for the date – between July 22 and August 7 – , and analyzed more than 60 thousand suspicions and highlighted the food and beverage sectors, software, electronics and computing as the most affected

Compared to the same period in 2023, suspicions of fraud increased by an impressive 1533%. This year, more than 60 thousand suspicions were recorded, just over 3 thousand in 2023. Despite this significant increase, the proven frauds decreased by 61%, decreasing from over 48 thousand to approximately 19 thousand occurrences, highlighting the effectiveness of the security measures enhanced by the company.

The survey also revealed that, although PIX continues to be the method most associated with fraud suspicions, the credit card has emerged as the leader in confirmed frauds, with a growth of 562% in occurrences. In 2023, the PIX dominated with 70% of proven frauds, followed by the ticket and card. This year, the PIX was implicated in 62% of the suspicions and 25% of the confirmed frauds, while the boleto accounted for 7% of confirmed incidents

Among the accounts involved, 78% of the fraud suspicions were in business accounts, with a high average ticket. However, 22% of the attempts were associated with personal accounts, indicating the use of personal accounts as "orange accounts" by criminals

The most impacted sectors are food and beverages, with more than 8 thousand suspects, followed by electronics and computer science, with more than 5 thousand suspects. However, the software sector, tied to applications, tools and utilities and games, recorded the highest number of confirmed frauds, totaling more than 12 thousand cases. Next, they are the footwear and clothing sector, with 552 frauds, and electronics and computer science, with 316 frauds

Our survey highlights the importance of strengthening security in all financial transactions. Despite the increase in fraud attempts, our ability to prevent the realization of these attacks demonstrates the robustness of our protection measures. We will continue to ensure the integrity of transactions and the security of our clients with rigor, mainly on commemorative dates, that we know the volume grows even more,"affirms Manoela Gieseler, Operations Director of Asaas
