Inspired by Pix, Colombia has launched its own instant payment system, Bre-B , which follows the same main characteristics as the Brazilian system: interoperability, 24/7 availability, and immediate settlement. Large-scale operation begins today after two weeks of testing, which started on September 23rd. From day one, international companies can already offer Bre-B to Colombian clients through EBANX . To facilitate this access, the company partnered with MOVii , the first banktech company in Latin America, which provides complete payment infrastructure for issuing and acquiring funds for individuals and businesses.
More than 30 million people have already registered to use the Bre-B card, according to the Banco de la República, Colombia's central bank . This number represents 76% of the country's adult population. At the same time, only 18% have access to credit cards, according to the institution's latest report . World Bank shows that Colombia has one of the lowest credit card penetration rates in Latin America. This number has remained stable since 2022. Meanwhile, the proportion of Colombians who make online transactions continues to grow, indicating an increase in local preference for alternative payment methods for online purchases.
