According to a new study by LinkedIn, the world's largest professional social network, 75% of Brazilian professionals surveyed are considering changing jobs in 2024. This data reflects a significant movement in the job market, at a time when the unemployment rate in Brazil is also showing important changes, as pointed out by a study from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) which showed that unemployment rose to 7.9% in the first quarter of 2024.
Alexandre Weiler, career and business consultant at ESIC, explains that career transition is the process of changing from one profession to another. This can occur when a professional graduates or works in one area but, over time, feels motivated to work in a different field. “The transition can be planned or happen naturally, due to promotions or internal selection processes within the company where the person works. In the case of a planned career transition, it is essential to reflect on some important questions such as the real motivation for this change, whether it's a matter of pursuing a specialization, whether the problem is the current work environment or the profession itself, among other important questions that provide a complete analysis of the professional,” he states.
Once the motivation for a career transition has been identified, it's crucial to take action, starting with updating your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect your skills, experience, and recent achievements. “Networking remains one of the most effective strategies for finding new job opportunities, so participate in events, connect with colleagues, and expand your network. In addition, it's essential to conduct job market research in your field to identify which companies are hiring, what the trends are, and what skills are in high demand, allowing you to better prepare for interviews and position yourself strategically,” says Weiler.
Success story: from law to sales
Sandro Wuicik, currently the commercial director and co-founder of Market4u, is an example of a career change. The previously successful lawyer transitioned to entrepreneurship and sales, where he found new opportunities for growth and fulfillment. "I realized that my argumentation and negotiation skills were perfectly applicable to sales. It was a challenge initially, but today I feel more fulfilled and see a promising future in my new career," shares Sandro.
The businessman explains that the transition process, especially the decision itself, was not easy. "I had gone to college, passed the bar exam, built a career in the sports field, which I was passionate about, but I felt something was missing."
It was then that Sandro received an invitation to partner with his brother-in-law, Eduardo, who was already an entrepreneur. "I switched from law to entrepreneurship because I realized a greater purpose; I knew the positive impact that entrepreneurship could have on the lives of millions of people," he says.
Several companies were created, some succeeded, others didn't, until they arrived at the market4u business model, today the largest microfranchise in Brazil and the largest network of autonomous markets in Latin America.
Tips from ESIC International career consultant, Alexandre Weiler, for changing careers.
1 - Evaluate your motivations
Before making any decision, it's important to understand why you want to change jobs. Ask yourself if it's a matter of dissatisfaction with your current environment, a search for new challenges, better financial conditions, or other personal reasons. Having clarity about your motivations will help you make a more informed decision.
2 – Know your professional goals
Changing the course of your career becomes easier when you know where you're going. You might want to start your own business, begin in a completely different field, or climb two promotions at your current company. The important thing is to have clarity about where you want to go and what your short, medium, and long-term goals are. This will allow you to plan effectively and maintain your motivation.
3 – Update your resume and LinkedIn profile.
With 75% of professionals considering a change, it's essential that your resume and LinkedIn profile are up-to-date and reflect your skills, experience, and recent achievements. Use relevant keywords from your field to increase your profile's visibility.
4 – Network
Networking remains one of the most effective ways to find new job opportunities. Attend events, connect with colleagues, and use LinkedIn to expand your network. Often, the best opportunities aren't publicly advertised and come through referrals.
5 – Research the market
Stay informed about the job market in your field. Identify which companies are hiring, what the trends are, and what skills are in high demand. This will allow you to better prepare for interviews and position yourself more strategically.
6 – Consider long-term growth.
When evaluating a new opportunity, think about your long-term growth. Ask about the possibilities for development and promotion within the company, and whether the organizational culture aligns with your values and career goals.
7 – Take care of your mental health.
Changing jobs can be a stressful process. It's important to take care of your mental health during this transition. Practice activities that help reduce stress, such as physical exercise, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy.
