President Lula sanctions law that rates international purchases above US$ 50

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) signed on Thursday (27) the law establishing the taxation of international purchases above US$ 50. The measure, dubbed “taxa das blusinhas”, is part of the law that created the Mover program, aimed at encouraging the decarbonization of the automotive sector.

According to the government, a provisional measure will be issued to regulate the new rate. The law puts an end to the exemption that benefited large e-commerce companies such as Shopee, Shein and Amazon.

Under the new legislation, products with value up to US$ 50 will be taxed in 20% on the purchase value. For items above US$ 50, the import fee will be 60%. However, there will be a discount on the taxation for products with values between US$ 50 and US$ 3,000.

In addition to the taxation of international purchases, the law sanctioned by President Lula also creates the Mover program, which aims to encourage the decarbonization of the automotive sector.

Companies that join the Mover regime may enjoy financial credits if they invest in research, development and technological production in Brazil.

The implementation of this new law represents a significant change in the international e-commerce and automotive industry, with potential impacts for both consumers and companies in the affected sectors.
