E-commerce fraud attempts increase 3.5% in 2024

Equifax BoaVista research reveals that in 2024, there was an increase in 3,5% in fraud attempts at the and e-commerce, compared to 2023, which recorded about 7 million coup attempts ticket average purchases were R$ 343.90.

The data indicates that the average ticket of fraud attempts has increased in 18,1% compared to the same period of the previous year, which recorded R$ 291.17, against R$ 343.90 in 2024.

On the national scene, the study reveals that 27,5% of fraud attempts, more than 2.2 Million, occurred in Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Sao Paulo. In contrast, Acre, Amapa and Roraima are the states with the lowest rate of fraud, representing only 0.2% of cases.

Specialist in developing solutions that help e-commerces and payment methods to combat fraud at all stages of the purchasing process online, Equifax BoaVista reports that its anti-fraud products have avoided a loss of approximately R$ 84.5 billion in e-commerce.

A data revealed by the survey concerns the days of the week with the highest incidence of fraud attempts: 15.11 Tp3T occurred on Fridays, and which is the day with the highest number of sales, when they occur 15.91 Tp3T of the 35 million online transactions. Already the peak time of the blows was at 14h, while the smallest record was observed at 4h during the weekend, especially on Sundays, the numbers of sales and fraud attempts are lower, corresponding to 11,3%.  

Despite this, “ data show us the most frequent behavior patterns of fraudsters, who usually act during high-motion hours in e-commerce to camouflage themselves between legitimate transactions, making detection difficult. This reinforces the importance of companies with e-commerce investing in monitoring and prevention technology, following the advancement of the innovations of the fraudsters THEMSELVES”, highlights Rogerio Signorini, Vice President of Products and Pre-Sales at Equifax BoaVista.
