Magalu transforms Nerdstore into a marketplace specializing in nerdy and geek items

Magalu has just won a new marketplace: the Nerdstore. The e-commerce of geek and nerd items created by the Young Nerd in 2006 was sold in 2019, but recently, Alexandre Ottoni and Deive Pazos, co-founders of the brand, took control of the virtual store and raised it to a new level.

Now, as an integral company of the Magalu ecosystem since 2021, the co-founders of the Young Nerd bet on the group's infrastructure to grow the business. Under Netshoes management is the largest sports and lifestyle e-commerce in the country.

“Our curatorship of products in partnership with Netshoes, which already has experience in the management of other e-commerces, makes us believe a lot in the growth of the” brand, says Deive Pazos. “Exactly so we made the decision to make room for sellers to sell on the site, because we know that today we are able to offer a greater assortment of products and meet all demand in the best possible way for the customer.”

Netshoes will be responsible for the production of Nerdstore brand products and for the entire operation of e-commerce, from the sales platform to logistics and service.“We will make this marketplace happen”, says Graciela Kumruian, CEO of the company. “All that is related to technology, customer experience, payment processing, inventory management, delivery logistics, negotiation with suppliers and after-sales, among others, will be in charge of the Netshoes team. It is a special mission and we are very excited to put Young Nerd in evidence and Netshoes also in the middle of the geoestore and geder items market. 

Netshoes interest in entering the market of nerds and geek products has always been latent. At the end of 2023, the company took the first step in this direction by launching, during CCXP, collab Residiuum, in partnership with Iron Studios. Then, together with Young Nerd, in early 2024, with the launch of Ruff Ghanor, debuted on the site an exclusive and limited collection of T-shirts with characters from the game. 

“Nerdstore's operation now further increases our support in this sector, which, according to the Brazilian Association of Brand and Character Licensing, earned more than 22 billion reais in 2022. It is a market still expanding and this value represents 5% of growth over the previous year. With this partnership, we added this universe to our platform and used all our know-how to raise Nerdstore to a new level of marketplace geek and nerd and bring to the consumer a superior” experience, says the executive.

Licensed launches and products

The first big bet of the Young Nerd to take back control of the Nerdstore is the collection of T-shirts from the movie Deadpool and Wolverine, one of the main releases planned in the cinema for this year and debuts next Friday (25). Customers can choose from five different prints and all items are licensed by Marvel.

The reasons for the sale

The Nerdstore was sold for a curious reason: a lot of demand. The rapid growth of the store and the desire to have a production of its own ended up becoming an unfeasible flow for the moment.It was impossible for all the processes to be managed by only two people Ottoni and Deive. “We became funnels of production and could not grow anymore because all production was concentrated in our hands. In addition to all the work in the store, we still had to edit the Nerdcast, which needed attention, time and quality.This all at a time when we were moving to the United States and managing retail at a distance was infeasible, they announced the YouTube video of the Ner in the Ner. 

In addition, the team had to analyze where it should stay focused and, as the founders have always been in the content area, they chose to outsource e-commerce. “We saw that Nerdstore had a much greater potential than we could deliver for it. During this entire period of the sale, Nerdstore did what we always dreamed of: having a distribution center in Sao Paulo and having its own production”, says Ottoni.
