Magalu Creates Directorate of Artificial Intelligence

Magazine Luiza (Magalu) announced the creation of a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) department, aiming to transform the shopping experience for its customers. Caio Gomes, an executive with experience at companies like Nubank and Amazon, has been appointed to lead this initiative. Gomes will be responsible for accelerating the development of "Lu's brain," a generative AI that promises to revolutionize consumer interaction with the company.

Virtual influencer Lu, already known by millions of consumers, will now have a "new brain" thanks to AI. "With artificial intelligence, Lu will gain a new, much more powerful brain, always at the service of the best experience for our customers," says Caio Gomes. "AI will be the new great revolution in retail, and we want to be protagonists of this movement."

With Gomes' arrival, Magalu intends to accelerate projects aimed at reducing product delivery times, improving conflict resolution, and enhancing communication with customers. Furthermore, the company plans to expand personalized recommendations made by Lu and increase the Magalu Cloud data base. All these initiatives are aligned with Encanta Magalu, the main theme of the year, which focuses on the customer experience.

Caio Gomes has extensive experience in data, having worked at major companies such as Amazon, Nubank, Único, and Booking. A physics graduate from the University of São Paulo, he also holds master's degrees in String Theory from the State University of São Paulo (UNESP) and in Physics and Mathematics from the École Polytechnique in France.

Magalu, one of Brazil's largest retail technology companies, boasts approximately 40 million active customers. In 2023, the company launched two new technological services: Magalu Cloud and "Lu's Brain."

Launched in December, Magalu Cloud aims to support Brazilian companies in their digital transformation journey. A key differentiator is its offering of products at more accessible prices, in Brazilian reais, setting it apart from other platforms whose pricing is tied to the dollar. The service was designed to address the needs of businesses often facing cost barriers to digitization.

Launched in July, "Lu's Brain" allows the virtual influencer to recommend products based on each customer's needs and preferences. For example, Lu can suggest the best smartphone based on battery life, price, screen durability, or suitability for video editing. Recommendations are generated automatically, based on information provided by customers.
