Akamai, a cloud services company that drives and protects online life, recently released a report on e-commerce and online practices of Brazilian consumers. Among other relevant information is that Generation Z is the one who reports most have been the victim of digital scams.
Only 44,76% of respondents between 18 and 24 years, and 45,33% of people between 24 and 29 years old claim to have never suffered a blow. These are the only age groups in which more than half of people claim to have been victims (more than 60), are 52,38%. Thus, among respondents, the number of people in Generation Z suffering blows is 17% higher than among baby boomers.
Generation Z, in its most common definition, consists of people born between 1996 and 2012 nd having, thus, between 11 and 28 years. The Brazilian numbers reflect a worldwide trend similar research in the United States, held by Deloitte, pointed out that members of Generation Z suffered 3 times more blows than those of the baby boomer generation.
“This may sound counterintuitive to many, including the young”, says Helder Ferrao, industry strategy manager at Akamai LATAM.“Gen Z, after all, are the so-called digital natives, people who have had no contact with the pre-internet world.”
“Mas”, “ things ended up being more complex than that: there was recently a wave of news about employers complaining about the younger ones, that they come to the market without knowing basic computer concepts, such as what are files and folders.Because of their experience being with cell phones and tablets, but not computers. There was, in fact, a deficit in computer education, but young people are faster in learning 'just as they adopt new technologies, adopt new habits.”
An example of this is the adoption of new technologies by the youngest: 75,52% of people between 18 and 24 years old claim to use Pix for their online purchases, a number that will progressively fall with age, until reaching its lowest level, 47,62%, among those over 60.
It is this taste for innovation that ends up exposing younger people to scams.“What is really happening is that older generations trust less in mobile. People over 60 tend to simply not use banking apps because they do not trust the technology.”
“If there is the scammer who targets the elderly”, concludes Helder, “there are also the experts in young people. These scams are based on dating apps, investment apps, apps to get a job. The scammers circulate ads by the favorite networks of young people, such as instagram and tiktok (one hour these apps and ads are taken off the air, because they are against the policies of the app stores, but then the damage is done.”
Consumer habits
The most common blow in any age group was to buy products and not receive, which reached one in four Brazilians &, interestingly, here the generation Z and baby boomers tie as the hardest hit, with almost 30% going through this situation. The second most common blow is to have the card cloned after a purchase on a website: 14% of Brazilians, but here the range between 18 and 24 years fares better than any other: only 9% went through this, versus 17% of those with more than 60.
In addition to security issues, Akamai's research also brought several other revelations about the online consumption habits of the Brazilian. The vast majority 74% 2 claims to make online purchases at least once a month, with 6% doing every day. Only 2% said never buy on the internet. The most adept generation of purchases are millennials: in the range between 30 and 39 years, are 84% buying at least every month (the number is 74% between 18 and 24 years, 2013T2013 to 8013 to 25).
Another generation difference is the preference for domestic or foreign shopping sites. When it comes to electronics, the youngest (18 to 24) prefer international marketplaces (33%) than the national (30%), while those over 60 prefer the national (33%) versus foreigners (23%). “Here, too, you can see the young's greater confidence in news, such as stores without tradition in Brazil”, comments Helder. “Even though the generational fight always gives broth to all of those in the world are not all of those factors are the young people.
