“Free and open source”: Zabbix CEO advocates for a profitable model without license fees

The largest gathering in Latin America about Zabbix and data monitoring brought together, in São Paulo on June 6th and 7th, developers, technology leaders, and professionals from various sectors to discuss the future of monitoring in diverse industries and critical environments. The agenda featured strategic talks about the tool’s roadmap, discussions led by clients and partners about the impact of open source on business, technical labs, and a business panel.

The Latin American community has played a consistent role in Zabbix’s evolution and the adoption of the open-source model as a viable solution for complex infrastructure challenges. With participants from Colombia, Uruguay, Mexico, and Brazil, the conference highlighted the region’s strength, which has become one of the most relevant for the global community. The tool has been used by companies across different sectors, reinforcing its pluralistic nature and its ability to meet critical demands in diverse environments.

Solid business model with no licensing fees

Alexei Vladishev, founder and global CEO of Zabbix, reaffirmed the company’s stance by stating that the software will remain free and open-source, even after two decades of operation. The release of the new version 8.0, scheduled for 2026, will bring advancements in observability, improvements in the interface and user experience, as well as the ability to handle streaming data using standards like OpenTelemetry and NetFlow.

According to Vladishev, the service, support, and training-based business model has proven to be solid. ‘It’s been proven that it’s possible to be open source and maintain a business model. There are no plans to change the licenses—Zabbix will always be an open-source product. These 20 years show that it’s possible to remain open-source while sustaining a viable business model,’ emphasized the global CEO.

One tool for multiple industries

Used in areas such as government, critical infrastructure, media, mining, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals, Zabbix has established itself as a common solution for diverse operational needs. Companies with specific demands find in this open-source tool a scalable answer for real-time monitoring of complex environments.

During the event, experts presented real-world cases and emphasized the platform’s versatility. ‘Zabbix meets 80% of the data collection and analysis needs of any business, regardless of the sector,’ explained Luciano Alves, CEO of Zabbix Latam, stressing that the goal is to ensure stability, control, and predictability in operations.

The CEO of Zabbix Latam highlighted the growth potential of MSPs (Managed Service Providers) and underscored the importance of specialized teams, reinforcing the role of certifications in delivering quality services. On this occasion, Alves also presented the recently released report by the organization, which highlights how to achieve better results with Zabbix. The event also covered the advancements in Zabbix Cloud, a solution designed for managing shared environments, offering automatic updates, on-demand backups, and resource isolation per client, enhancing security, flexibility, and operational efficiency.
