Federal Express Corporation, the largest express transportation company in the world, is incorporating 27 electric vehicles into its Brazilian fleet, bringing its zero-emission units to 52. The new vans, model Mercedes Benz eSprinter Furgão Street 320, are being allocated to FedEx stations in the cities of Sumaré (SP), Curitiba (PR), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Betim (MG), and São Paulo (SP).
The electrification of the entire pickup and delivery fleet is one of the pillars guiding the company’s global goal to achieve carbon-neutral operations by 2040. FedEx is the pioneering cargo company in acquiring electric vehicles in Brazil, with the first units arriving in the country in 2013. Currently, the company’s local electric fleet includes vans and motorcycles, used especially for last-mile deliveries and in high-traffic areas.
“At FedEx, we believe that economic growth and sustainability must go hand in hand,” says Camila Lima, Vice President of Operations at FedEx Brazil. “We are focused on adopting technically viable and economically sustainable solutions that increase efficiency and contribute to emissions reduction without compromising service quality. Working smarter, with a focus on energy efficiency, also represents a tangible opportunity to generate savings and strengthen our operational network.”
“The electrification of the FedEx fleet, now including the eSprinter, is a clear example of our commitment to transforming urban and highway transportation,” states Fabio F. Silva, Head of Van Sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans Brazil. “With high performance, versatility of application, and zero emissions, the electric Sprinter offers a robust and smart solution for sustainable logistics operations. More than just providing vehicles, we aim to lead in clean, efficient, and economically viable mobility. This collaboration reinforces the alignment between two global brands that share a vision for a more efficient and environmentally responsible future.”
Implementing cleaner technologies in facilities and fleet
To help power its growing fleet of electric vehicles, FedEx is working to expand the use of renewable energy sources worldwide. In Brazil, the company is installing solar panels and increasing its participation in the Free Energy Market. In the fiscal year 2025 (FY25), ending in May 2025, FedEx’s Serra (ES) unit began operating with solar panel technology, while the Cajamar (SP) and São Paulo (SP) facilities transitioned to the Free Energy Market.
Currently, FedEx’s Brazilian operation has 12 units using renewable energy: Belo Horizonte, Campo Grande, Joinville, Petrolina, Simões Filho, and Vitória use solar panels; Belo Horizonte, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Fortaleza, Recife, São Paulo, and Cajamar are part of the Free Energy Market.
While working to expand the use of electric vehicles, the company is also focused on improving the efficiency of its combustion fleet during this transition period, replacing older and less efficient vehicles with newer models, including those with Euro 6 engines, which emit fewer pollutants. As a result of these efforts, the vehicles in FedEx’s ground fleet in Brazil have an average age of seven years, making it one of the youngest fleets in the market.
