E-commerce boom pressures logistics and opens space for smart lockers in the last mile

Brazilian e-commerce reached a historic milestone of R$ 225 billion in revenue in 2024, a growth of 14.6% compared to the previous year and a 311% jump over the last five years, solidifying retail digitalization as an irreversible path. However, this rapid expansion has highlighted one of the sector’s biggest operational challenges: last-mile logistics. The final stage, which connects the distribution center to the consumer, has become a critical bottleneck, pressured by increasing demand for faster, safer, and more flexible deliveries. In this scenario, smart lockers emerge as a strategic solution to optimize delivery flow and enhance the customer experience.

The complexity of the last mile involves high transportation costs, delivery difficulties in areas with restricted access, and the problem of failed attempts, which occur when the recipient is not at home. These factors not only increase operational costs for companies but also create consumer dissatisfaction, as they expect convenience and speed. The search for alternatives to solve this equation has driven the adoption of self-service technologies, with smart lockers standing out for their efficiency.

“Modern consumers no longer want to be hostages to delivery windows. They seek autonomy and security, and that’s exactly what locker technology provides,” says Gabriel Peixoto, CEO of Meu Locker. “For retailers and carriers, the advantage is twofold: we ensure a 100% success rate on the first delivery attempt, optimizing routes and drastically reducing operational costs and the carbon footprint associated with additional attempts. We’re transforming the last mile from a logistical bottleneck into a point of convenience and efficiency.”

Functioning as secure, automated pickup points installed in strategic locations such as gas stations, supermarkets, and subway stations, lockers allow customers to retrieve their packages at their most convenient time, 24/7.

For carriers and retailers, the technology optimizes delivery routes, consolidates multiple packages into a single point, and eliminates the cost of additional attempts. By offering more autonomy and security, smart lockers not only solve a logistical problem but also become a competitive advantage, directly meeting the demands of modern consumers and sustaining the continuous growth of e-commerce in the country.
