Father's Day: Asaas survey reveals significant increase in fraud attempts in 2024

The most recent survey of the area of combating fraud of Asaas, financial institution and full digital account for companies, reveals a significant increase in fraud attempts during Father's Day 2024. The survey, conducted in the database of more than 160 thousand customers of the financial institution, brings a sampling of the period in which people potentially begin to make purchases for the date 22 July to 7 August 7 , and more than 60 thousand suspected and highlighted the sectors of food and beverages, software, electronics and computer as the most affected.

Compared to the same period of 2023, suspicions of fraud increased by an impressive 1533%. This year, more than 60 thousand suspicions were registered, compared to just over 3 thousand in 2023. Despite this significant increase, proven fraud decreased by 61%, from more than 48 thousand to approximately 19 thousand occurrences, evidencing the effectiveness of the security measures improved by the company. 

The survey also revealed that, although PIX remains the most associated medium with suspected fraud, credit card emerged as the leader in confirmed fraud, with a growth of 562% in occurrences. In 2023, PIX dominated with 70% of proven fraud, followed by the ticket and card. This year, PIX was implicated in 62% of suspicions and 25% of confirmed fraud, while the billet was 7% of confirmed incidents.

Among the accounts involved, 78% of the suspected fraud were in legal accounts, with high average ticket.However, 22% of the attempts were associated with physical accounts, indicating the use of personal accounts as “or oranges” by criminals.

The sectors most impacted are food and beverages, with more than 8 thousand suspicions, followed by electronics and computer, with more than 5 thousand suspicions. However, the software sector, linked to applications, tools and utilities and games, recorded the largest number of confirmed frauds, totaling more than 12 thousand cases. Then there are the footwear and clothing sector, with 552 frauds, and electronics and computer, with 316 frauds.

“Our survey underscores the importance of strengthening security in all financial transactions. Despite the increase in fraud attempts, our ability to prevent the effectiveness of these attacks demonstrates the robustness of our protection measures.We will continue to ensure the integrity of transactions and the security of our customers rigorously, especially on commemorative dates, which we know the volume grows even more,”, said Manoela Gieseler, Director of Operations at Asaas.
