With 78 million minutes consumed by audiobooks alone in 2024, Skeelo solidifies its position as one of the biggest players in the market.

According to the first “Map of the Portuguese Language Audio Industry”, by Dosdoce.com, Brazil is responsible for more than 95% of audiobook sales in Portuguese-speaking countries.  This number is mainly due to the diversification of the sources of revenue from the audio industry through strategic partnerships and new business models, such as B2B2C. Within this scope, the Skeelos, Platform and Community of Reading, has been standing out when recording, in 2024 alone, 78 million minutes consumed in the format in its application only in 2024.

In total, the company's collection exceeds the mark of 5,000 audio titles, which are distributed at the Skeelo store, at the Leer+ subscription club and everyone who has the benefit offered by more than 120 companies, including Vivo, of course, UOL, without stopping, which provides a suggestion of a digital book or audiobook per month to users, who can be accepted or exchanged for another at no additional cost.

“We want to democratize the access and consumption of the book as other players have done with formats such as music and video”, says André Palme, director of Marketing and Content at Skeelo. “ The Audiobook is a format that adapts very well to the mobile and digital routine, being able to deliver the best stories in a way that fits into the daily lives of users”, he adds.

Co-productions with publishersThe dosdoce.com study also reveals that the Portuguese-language audio industry generates around 30 million euros per year, mainly based on five activities: publishers (59%), studios that produce sound content in Portuguese (26.5%), media (7.5%), companies that offer audio-related services (4%) and platforms that sell content in this format in Brazil (3%), such as Skeelo.

Despite looking like a small percentage, this last category ends up being one of the biggest promoters in the sector by investing in the production of audiobooks via publishers. Skeelo itself is an example of this, as it makes co-productions with the biggest names in the country's publishing market to publish audiobooks. In addition, all minibooks in the collection are available both in text and in audio.

Among these joint productions, there are highlights such as: “Viver as a champion”, narrated by Kyra Gracie and published together with Ediouro; “Flores para Algernon”, written by Daniel Keyes, narrated by Ciro Sales and published alongside Aleph; and “O Alchemist”, produced by Paulo Coelho, narrated by Beth Goulart and published with Sant Jordi.

Market projectionsFor the next few years, the prospects for audiobooks are even more optimistic. This trend is reinforced by the “Audiobook Global Growth Report” published by the Frankfurt Book Fair, which projects a 10% growth for the sound entertainment industry around the world by the end of this decade.

“We believe that Brazil has the potential to become one of the largest global audiobook markets,” says Palme. “ The format has become relevant for Brazilians and has the potential to fight over the headphones along with music and podcasts, so we want to contribute to democratizing it and expanding its reach”, he concludes.
