Kaspersky has detected a proliferation of fraudulent platforms posing as legitimate resellers of Labubu figurines on illegitimate websites. The criminals entice fans with fake offers to collect confidential financial information from buyers on scam websites in Portuguese, Spanish, Hungarian, and French, which mimic the visual identity of trusted resellers.
The Labubu figurines, created by Kasing Lung, have captivated a global audience. The excitement of the “surprise box” and the chance to find rare editions, valued at up to US$3,000, have created fertile ground for scammers to exploit the high demand.
Kaspersky has identified scam websites in Portuguese, Spanish, Hungarian, and French, which mimic the visual identity of trusted resellers like Pop Mart (the official reseller and creator of the Labubu figurines). These fraudulent sites often offer tempting discounts or “exclusive editions” of the figurines to trick victims into entering bank card details or other personal information.
Portuguese website sells “original products imported from Japan” for R$47.90
For example, one Portuguese website claims to be an “official Labubu store” and sells “original products imported from Japan” at a special offer price of R$47.90. Another Spanish website claims to sell “original Labubu” figurines and describes the backstory of the creation of the figurines, offering various figurines at “special prices” ranging from US$30 to US$79.99.
“I always like to reiterate the saying: ‘When something seems too good to be true, it probably is.’ We constantly see urgent discount offers taking advantage of buyers’ anxiety—in this case, to acquire rare figurines. These fraudulent platforms now appear in multiple languages, expanding their reach.,” commentsFabio Assolini, Director of Kaspersky’s Global Research and Analysis Team for Latin America. “Fans are advised to purchase Labubu figurines only from confirmed resellers, such as Pop Mart’s official channels, after verifying the authenticity of the website URL, and to avoid interacting with sites that appear suspicious.”
To protect against these scams, Kaspersky recommends:
- Buy only from official resellers:Only purchase from authorized and verified resellers.
- Check the website URL:Before making any purchase, ensure the website URL is legitimate and does not contain typos or unusual characters.
- Beware of deals that seem too good to be true:Excessive discounts or “exclusive editions” on unknown sites are strong indicators of fraud.
- Use security solutions:Keep robust security software on your devices to detect and block phishing and malware sites.
- Never share personal or financial information on suspicious websites:Be cautious when entering credit card details or other sensitive information.
