Federal Express Corporation, the world’s largest express transportation company, is incorporating 27 electric vehicles into its Brazilian fleet, now totaling 52 zero-emission units. The new vans, Mercedes Benz eSprinter Furgão Street 320 models, are being allocated to FedEx stations in the cities of Sumaré (SP), Curitiba (PR), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Betim (MG), and São Paulo (SP).
The electrification of the entire pickup and delivery fleet is one of the pillars guiding the company’s global goal to neutralize carbon emissions from its operations by 2040. FedEx is the pioneering cargo company in acquiring electric vehicles in Brazil, with the first units arriving in the country in 2013. Currently, the company’s local electric fleet includes vans and motorcycles, used especially for last-mile deliveries and in areas with heavy traffic.
“At FedEx, we believe that economic growth and sustainability must go hand in hand,” says Camila Lima, Vice President of Operations at FedEx in Brazil. “We are focused on adopting technically viable and economically sustainable solutions that increase efficiency and contribute to emission reductions without compromising service quality. Working smarter, with a focus on energy efficiency, also represents a concrete opportunity to generate savings and strengthen our operational network.”
“The electrification of FedEx’s fleet, now including the eSprinter, is a concrete example of our commitment to transforming urban and road transportation,” says Fabio F. Silva, Head of Van Sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars & Vans Brazil. “With high performance, application versatility, and zero emissions, the electric Sprinter offers a robust and intelligent solution for sustainable logistics operations. More than just supplying vehicles, we want to be protagonists of clean, efficient, and economically viable mobility. This collaboration reinforces the alignment between two global brands that share a vision of a more efficient and environmentally responsible future.”
Implementing cleaner technologies in facilities and fleet
To help power its growing fleet of electric vehicles, FedEx is working to expand the use of renewable energy sources worldwide. In Brazil, the company is installing solar panels and expanding its participation in the Free Energy Market. In the fiscal year 2025 (FY25), ending in May 2025, FedEx’s unit in Serra (ES) began operating with solar panel technology, while the facilities in Cajamar (SP) and São Paulo (SP) migrated to the Free Energy Market.
Currently, FedEx’s Brazilian operation has 12 units using renewable energy: Belo Horizonte, Campo Grande, Joinville, Petrolina, Simões Filho, and Vitória use solar panels; Belo Horizonte, Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Fortaleza, Recife, São Paulo, and Cajamar are in the Free Energy Market.
While working to expand the use of electric vehicles, the company is also focused on improving the efficiency of its combustion fleet during this transition period, replacing older and less efficient vehicles with newer models, including those with Euro 6 engines, which emit fewer pollutants. As a result of these efforts, FedEx’s ground fleet vehicles in Brazil have an average age of seven years, making it one of the newest fleets in the market.
