EPS packaging is an ally of e-commerce and the circular economy

In the competitive universe of e-commerce and with increasingly demanding and conscious consumers, logistical solutions that align efficiency, economy, and sustainability have become essential. Meeting these new demands, the EPS (expanded polystyrene) packaging from Termotécnica stands out by offering much more than protection: it adds sustainability value to the entire digital retail chain.

Recyclability and circular economy: new life for post-consumer packaging

Contrary to common perception, EPS packaging – better known as Styrofoam* – which protects appliances, electronics, food, beverages, and other products that reach consumers’ homes, is 100% recyclable and needs proper post-use disposal to enable the circular economy of this material

At the end of the use of these packages, consumers can easily find a proper disposal point through the platform Sou Reciclável, a portal created by Termotécnica that indicates collection points across the country.

Termotécnica has also structured a robust reverse logistics system.

Since 2007, the EPS Recycling Program has recycled approximately 48 million kilograms of post-consumer EPS – equivalent to 10 Maracanã stadiums -, reintroducing this material into various production chains – from construction to the appliance industry. This practical implementation of the circular economy is reflected in Repor – Circular Polystyrene, the brand of recycled raw material by Termotécnica, showing how today’s protective packaging can become components of new products tomorrow.

Reduction of logistical costs and emissions

EPS is composed of 98% air, making it extremely lightweight. This has a direct logistical impact: reduces fuel consumption in transportation and, consequently, CO₂ eq emissions, contributing to a more sustainable operation. Additionally, its lightness allows for greater agility and lower costs in delivering products sold via e-commerce – an important competitive advantage.

Increased shelf-life and reduction of losses (Save Food Initiative)

With the growth of e-commerce for fresh food, seafood, and perishable products, the demand for functional and sustainable packaging is increasing. Termotécnica’s EPS packaging is ideal for the transport of temperature-sensitive products, ensuring they arrive in perfect condition to the end consumer – even over long distances.

For these markets, the DaColheita and IceBox from Termotécnica offer excellent thermal insulation, preserving food quality for longer. This not only extends the shelf life of products but also directly contributes to the goals of the Save Food Initiative, by the FAO, of which Termotécnica is a signatory, reducing losses and waste throughout the entire chain – from producer to end consumer.

Sustainability with concrete results

Termotécnica’s work is internationally recognized as a case of innovation and commitment to sustainability, integrating global recycling chains and effectively contributing to the construction of an e-commerce with lower environmental impact and greater efficiency.

In addition to its recyclability, EPS:

  • Does not generate toxic waste in the production or recycling process;
  • Consumes very few natural resources (such as water and energy) during its recycling.

Termotécnica’s EPS packaging demonstrates that it is possible to combine protection, logistical efficiency, and environmental responsibility. In the fast-paced world of e-commerce, this solution not only meets current demands but anticipates the future of packaging: smart, circular, and sustainable.
