Engaging goals: 1 in 3 companies still fails to align objectives with strategy

The research “Trends and Challenges in Performance Management“, conducted by Qulture.Rocks — a leading company in the Brazilian market for performance management solutions and part of the UOL EdTech ecosystem — reveals valuable data about the implementation of goals in the corporate world.

According to the survey, 32.2% of organizations still struggle to align team goals with the company’s strategic objectives, which impacts clarity, engagement, and execution effectiveness. Additionally, the misalignment between goals and organizational objectives also hinders the achievement of results set in the company’s strategic planning.

Among the experts’ key recommendations to ensure proper implementation and management of goals in any company is the idea of “cascading” or “unfolding” goals. As Rebecca Malzac Pontes, Operations Manager at Qulture.Rocks, explains:

“The goal-unfolding process here at Qulture begins with a strategic planning session involving leadership from all areas to ensure all business fronts are considered in this planning. We define the company’s objectives for the year and then unfold them across teams, ensuring the entire organization is aligned with the company’s goals.”

The research also reveals that 25.1% of companies report low engagement from teams in tracking goals, and 24.8% mention difficulty in breaking down OKRs into individual and team goals. These numbers highlight the importance of a collective, transparent, and continuous process led by prepared and close-knit managers.

For leaders to build truly engaging goals, technological support is critical. Whether through Artificial Intelligence tools or dedicated goal-management platforms, technology combined with human capital is what drives engagement and enables structured goal and OKR setting.

“Here at Qulture, teams have the autonomy to update in real-time, track objectives from other areas, and understand the company’s overall progress. We also use a strategic mapping tool, so departmental objectives remain aligned. We know which area’s objective contributes to the company’s macro-goal,” says Rebecca Malzac.

A well-structured goal implementation and management process is ultimately essential to foster other key aspects of performance management, such as continuous feedback culture, recognition for goal achievement, and the promotion of employees’ technical and behavioral development.
