Crypto investors have been watching the market closely since Republican Donald Trump took office for the second time as President of the United States. Considered the first candidate to accept donations in digital assets, including Bitcoin, and signaling plans to create a federal cryptocurrency reserve, both he and First Lady Melania Trump launched their own digital currencies, which surged in value after the inauguration. Experts recommend caution.
“The euphoria of Trump’s inauguration, his nationalist rhetoric, and the shift in U.S. economic policy may have contributed to the general rise in cryptocurrency prices, including the ‘memecoins’ created by him and the First Lady,” analyzes Luis Fernando Cabral, an accountant specializing in investor accounting at Contador do Trader. According to him, it’s not that purchasing crypto assets isn’t recommended, but investors should analyze the market to determine whether it’s the right time to buy or sell specific coins.
Trump has stated in interviews and speeches that he wants to turn the U.S. into a cryptocurrency hub. He even launched his own ‘memecoin’ $Trump, which surged by 680% before falling back to 450% two days later—similar to the First Lady’s cryptocurrency, which surpassed a 25% increase but slowed down a few days after the inauguration. “This volatility is natural, which is why I always recommend caution, analysis, and guidance from an expert. After all, investors must also consider future tax implications,” warns the accountant.
According to Luis Fernando, investors should be aware of crypto asset declaration requirements, as many people are obligated but fail to report. In Brazil, taxes only apply to earnings exceeding R$35,000 per month on domestic exchanges. Above that, rates are 15% for gains up to R$5 million, 17.5% for R$5-10 million, 20% for R$10-30 million, and 22.5% for gains over R$30 million monthly. For transactions on foreign exchanges, taxation is fixed at 15% with no exemptions. “That’s why it’s essential to assess whether joining a crypto trend is worthwhile, determining if it’s temporary and analyzing the consequences.”
