AI and data: TGT ISG study reveals challenges and opportunities in the Brazilian analytics market

According to the new edition of the ISG Provider Lens™ Advanced Analytics and AI Services 2024 study for Brazil, produced and distributed by TGT ISG, companies in Brazil are making significant progress in AI adoption and showing greater maturity in their data-driven approaches. However, service providers still face two major challenges: adapting solutions to clients’ varying levels of analytical maturity and implementing effective data governance while demonstrating return on investment.

The report reinforces that analytics service providers in Brazil are making significant progress in AI adoption. However, challenges remain, particularly regarding the diversity of clients’ analytical maturity levels. ‘This year’s study highlights service providers’ ability to handle this diversity. In this context, maturity assessment methodologies have gained importance,’ comments Marcio Tabach, distinguished analyst at TGT ISG and author of the study. According to him, service providers must conduct workshops and training to help clients achieve expected project outcomes. Data literacy training is crucial for the success of these initiatives.

‘Advanced analytics and AI services have been widely discussed in the media due to their potential to increase corporate efficiency and productivity, as well as the risks they pose to organizations and society. Much of this controversy stems from the rapid adoption of generative AI (GenAI). The debate around AI plays a key role in transforming business mindsets in Brazil, demonstrating a deeper understanding of the relevance of data-driven decisions and the need for a data-driven approach to ensure competitiveness,’ he explains.

GenAI adoption has further increased the need for data governance programs, as the technology works with unstructured data such as contracts, emails, and call center recordings. When data science was limited to structured data like databases, it followed some level of governance, including information security, restricted access, and storage in data lakes. However, unstructured data lacks such processes and may be scattered across various storage types.

‘Last year’s study already indicated that governance plays a crucial role in organizations’ data journeys. This year was no different. Many service providers reported challenges due to varying levels of clients’ analytical maturity. There are many cases where data is trapped in silos, whether in the cloud or on-premises, and some scattered across different company systems and files,’ the author notes. While data governance plays a significant role in technology-based companies, non-tech companies still have much to learn.

Another step toward modernization includes building GenAI agents that enable data navigation through natural language interfaces. ‘With these agents, users can ask data-related questions and receive automated charts and answers without complex calculations or data manipulation. These modernization approaches can empower citizen data scientists—business professionals who use data to support decision-making,’ he concludes.
