More than 50% of scales sold in e-commerce are irregular: meeting discusses how to change this scenario

In order to expand the dialogue between the public sector and companies in the metrology sector, ABRAPEM (Brazilian Association of Scale, Weight, and Measurement Manufacturers, Permittees, and Importers) and REMESP (Metrological Network of the State of São Paulo) will host, on August 13, in São Paulo, the event “Pioneering Paths for Fraud-Free Trade of Goods and Services”. The initiative will bring together authorities, regulatory and supervisory entities, industrial unions from various categories, and manufacturers for a series of discussions on the main challenges in the market for regulated products.

The opening will feature the presence of ABRAPEM’s president, Carlos Amarante, and REMESP’s Celso Scaranello, as well as Federal Deputy Celso Russomanno, recognized for his efforts in defending consumer rights and transparency in consumer relations.

The program includes institutional presentations, manufacturer and union cases, as well as panels with representatives from public agencies and partner entities. Participation is expected from Sicetel (National Union of the Ferrous Metals Wire Drawing and Rolling Industry), Omron Healthcare (manufacturer of thermometers and blood pressure monitors), Sindicel (Union of the Electrical Conductors, Wire Drawing, and Non-Ferrous Metals Rolling Industry of the State of São Paulo), and IQA (Automotive Quality Institute), who will share their experiences with the regulatory environment and the impacts of the presence of irregular instruments and products in their sectors.

The event will also have the presence of strategic organs such as Inmetro, IPEM-SP (Instituto de Pesos e Medidas do Estado de São Paulo), Receita Federal do Brasil, Procon-SP, and ABCOMM (Associação Brasileira de Comércio Eletrônico), presenting their actions focused on control, inspection, and strengthening of safe commercial practices.

More than an institutional exposure opportunity, ‘Desbravando’ aims to establish itself as a space for collective solutions building, promoting active listening, improving regulatory processes, and ensuring competitive safety for companies operating in the metrological market and others similarly subject to some form of compulsory regulation by combating piracy and other irregular practices, as well as ensuring the safety of the user of measuring instruments or related services.

Carlos Amarante, president of Abrapem, states that the entity estimates that nearly 50% of commercial scale sales today are irregular: without mandatory approval by Inmetro, without an invoice, etc. ‘This event will be a great opportunity for the public and private sectors to understand the situation together and seek a harmonious solution to this problem that causes insecurity for the user of measurement instruments (individuals or legal entities), revenue decline for companies operating correctly (manufacturers and importers), tax revenue loss (federal, state, and municipal), and job loss.’
