End of the DASN deadline boosts the use of digital platforms among MEIs

Brazilian individual micro-entrepreneurs (MEI) have until the next day May 31 to send the Annual MEI Declaration (DASN-SIMEI), a mandatory document for the entrepreneur to report their income and the company to remain regular with the Federal Revenue. Although the declaration can be made for free on the Simples Nacional Portal, the process has generated many doubts among micro-entrepreneurs, which has increased the demand for digital tools to assist in filling out the information. Data from the MaisMei application indicate that the search for digital solutions for submitting the declaration has grown significantly in the first two weeks of May, reflecting the increasing demand for the use of technology to simplify the bureaucracy of micro-entrepreneurs. So far, MaisMei has already processed around 490 thousand DASN.

“It is very common for small entrepreneurs to have doubts about the correct places to enter each information, revenue limit, among others. It is also common for many to leave it to the last minute, this scenario can become complicated in case of inconsistencies in the data, which we can detect and assist the user in a simple way”, says Mateus Vicente, CEO and co-founder of MaisMei. According to him, through the use of the application, the time required to submit the DASN has dropped to an average of five minutes, facilitating the fulfillment of tax obligations by MEI.

According to a survey carried out by MaisMei, currently, when MEIs seek specialized digital support, the majority of demands are related to tax declaration (53.22%), followed by issuing invoices (22.63%). 5,640 registered micro-entrepreneurs in the company’s application were surveyed – aimed at assisting and performing these and other MEI management tasks.

Kályta Caetano, head of Accounting at MaisMei, assesses that it is normal for managers less familiar with bureaucratic tasks to make some mistakes. “The MEI regime was created to simplify taxation and reduce costs, but even so, doubts often arise about revenue limits, sending the DASN, and other obligations that, if not met, can result in fines, loss of benefits, or even the cancellation of the CNPJ,” she explains.

Legal Implications

If a Microentrepreneur does not file the Annual Declaration of Simples Nacional, they are subject to some penalties and restrictions. They are:

  • Fine: Filing late subjects the taxpayer to a penalty of 2% per month of delay, capped at 20% of the total declared taxes, or a minimum of R$ 50. The fine is automatically issued after the declaration is submitted.
  • Restrictions and impediments: An irregular MEI with the Federal Revenue may face restrictions, such as not issuing invoices, difficulties in obtaining negative certificates of debts, participating in public tenders, obtaining loans, among others.

“In addition to paying fines and other penalties from the Federal Revenue, there is a risk of the CNPJ being canceled after two years without filing the declaration and paying the monthly contribution slip (DAS). Consequently, the responsible party may lose social security benefits and others, such as temporary disability assistance,” emphasizes the head of Accounting at MaisMei.

The Annual MEI Declaration is done online and free of charge through the Simples Nacional Portal. The platform assists the user through a step-by-step process. With the MaisMei mobile app, it is possible to make the declaration in an optimized and secure manner. Just fill out a form with your business information and wait for the team of experts to send the declaration submission receipt.
