International Safer Internet Day promotes debates on responsible use of the web

Safer Internet Day will be celebrated on February 11 and 12 this year. The initiative, that brings together more than 180 countries, seeks to engage NGOs, public agencies, companies and various other actors in a debate about safe use, ethical and responsible internet, with a focus on user privacy and protection

Among the topics covered in the event's programming are lectures on digital privacy, that guide on the risks of sharing personal information online; media education classes, that help to identify and combat misinformation; and discussions about the impacts of technology on the emotional health of young people and adults

"Security and good digital practices affect people of all ages and profiles". Disinformation and scams resulting from the leakage of personal data, for example, they are frequent challenges for adults and the elderly. Children and adolescents are already more vulnerable to inappropriate exposure and cyberbullying. That's why, it is essential to promote awareness for a safer internet for everyone, affirms Dr.. Patrícia Peck, digital law specialist and CEO of Peck Advogados

Advances and challenges

Brazil has made progress in the pursuit of greater digital security. A reflection of this concern is the approval of Law No. 15.100/2025, that restricts the use of cell phones in public and private schools across the country and requires teachers to guide students on the responsible use of technology

However, there is still a long way to go. Digital education in Brazil needs to evolve significantly. The topic should be addressed not only in the school environment, but also in public spaces in general. Only with a more aware population can we create a safe internet, allowing for a healthy use of technology that is present in every moment of our daily lives, highlights Peck

Peck Institute for Digital Citizenship

Furthermore, The Institute promotes actions to combat bullying and cyberbullying. With lectures and activities in schools, raise awareness among children and adolescents about the impacts of discrimination in the virtual environment

Another highlight is the projectDigital Citizenship, that has already benefited 1.600 students from public schools in the metropolitan region of São Paulo. The initiative is open to new institutions interested in promoting digital education and online citizenship

In honor ofInternational Safer Internet Day, the IPCD will publish a booklet proposing a reflection on how young people are able to identify and understand their emotions in relation to the internet
