Fraud is still a big challenge for online stores in Brazil

In retail, the security of e-commerce transactions has been a constant concern due to the persistent threat of fraud. The 2023 Fraud Map, published by ClearSale, has collected the main data on attempted online shopping scams in Brazil over the last year, including the categories of products most sought after by fraudsters, target audience and most impacted means of payment.

Over the last year, more than 3.7 million fraud attempts were registered, representing a portion of 1.4% of all orders placed in e-commerce. As for the public, men are usually the main target, whose value of attempts reaches 1.1 billion reais, considering the average ticket of purchases in the amount of R$1,042.09. People up to 25 years are also the most affected compared to other age groups, bringing together 1.9% of coup attempts.

The report also indicates that the movement has affected the performance of retailers' sales: the average ticket of fraud attempts in 2023, of R$925.44, was twice as high as the average ticket of legitimate orders.

The first edition of the study commissioned by Pagaleve io fintech that offers the means of payment of Pix Parcelado IO, and carried out by GMattos consultancy, shows that, in March 2024, the average cost of fraud management of a merchant represents approximately 1.9% of its revenue, between costs with chargeback and anti-fraud tools. Thus, forms of payments that reduce the risk are even more relevant for the merchant.

Payment methods against fraud

The Fraud Map indicated that, among the most used means of payment in coup attempts in 2023, the credit card appears in second place, accounting for 3.4 million attempts, equivalent to 3.4 billion reais; behind only the bank slip, with 121.7 million fraud attempts, reaching a value of 13.1 million reais.

On Mother's Day this year, for example, Clearsale data points out that fraud attempts accounted for about R$ 92 million, 4.1% higher than the previous year.

“It is understandable that the use of credit card is often used for installment purchases since it is a form of payment widely spread among Brazilians in addition to being traditional. But it is important to comment that there is already a method of installment that does not require a credit card: the Pix Parceledo. The form of payment saves the merchant costs related to fraud while providing an additional means of payment allowing more consumers to buy in the e-commerce retailer. ”, explains Guilherme Romao, Chief Risk Officer of Pagaleve.

Pix Parcelado represents a form of inclusion for consumers who are not fully served by credit card & SO contributing to the expansion of the offer and increasing the conversion rates of merchants.

“In the same way that currently you almost do not find virtual stores without the form of payment credit card available, we believe that in the near future, those retailers who do not adhere to the Pix Parcelado, will be left behind. The trend is that this form of payment grows even more in the coming years and consolidates itself as one of the most used means of payment in our country”.
