Generative Artificial Intelligence: important in life, in the arts and in the world

Currently, aBuzzwordthat anyone knows and uses is Artificial Intelligence (AI): it has taken over conversations, company operations, and it's not just a passing trend, it is here to stay. AI has some models, and the buzzword at the moment is Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), which is capable of learning from all the "traces" we leave on the internet to generate information and, from there, produce answers to questions we ask through commands calledprompt

But what caused this "boom" to happen for a technology that is no longer new? It approached common use and became simpler. This is because IAG is a technology that can generate new content, such as text, images, and music, by being "trained" on a dataset.

It is important to remember that IAG is a tool and, like any tool, it can be used for good or not. It is our role to ensure it is used responsibly and that society is protected from the misuse of this technology.

I really like to point out thatTHE HUMANIt is essential throughout this journey to determine the creative, informative, and useful profile. It is humans who ensure the use of AI for good and not for evil. This is our greatest task ahead of this future. I will highlight below examples of the "Good IAG".

Daily use

In daily life, we use maps with routes and spreadsheets that help us create formulas without needing to be experts. Other examples of how people are using AI positively are

  • Creative content- can generate poems, stories, and musical pieces. OpenAI created the GPT-3 language model that can generate human-quality text in response to a wide range of questions.
  • Translation- can translate languages. Google Translate uses AI to translate over 100 languages.
  • Writing- can write different types of content, such as articles and emails, with accuracy. Grammarly uses AI to check grammatical and spelling errors in texts written by humans.
  • Answers- can answer questions in an informative way. Siri and Google Assistant use AI to answer questions on a wide range of topics.

Use in marketing

IAG is also present in marketing, mainly in internet and social media actions, such as content relevance (analyzing browsing patterns and interactions) and user experience (engaging users by personalizing content and ads).

Use in education

In education, IAG makes it possible to increase student interest through:

  • Personalized and adaptive learning –analyzes, in real time, the progress and needs of students, adjusting their experiences based on learning difficulties and facilities.
  • Gamification –can add gamification features and make learning more engaging for students.
  • Virtual tutors– can create virtual tutors with individualized attention that help students with their assignments.

Use in art and music

An interesting application of AGI is the creation of art and music based on a database and artistic styles. Generative Adversarial Neural Networks (GANs) and Variational Autoencoder Neural Networks (VAEs) are technologies used for this purpose. Artists such as John Whitney (computer animator), Vera Molnar (computer artist), SKYGGE (musician), Refik Anadol (designer), Mario Klingemann (computer artist), and Robbie Barrat (designer) explored AGI in their works.

However, this situation raises intellectual property issues. Firstly, the concept of authorship becomes blurred when it comes to AI-generated artworks. Who should receive the credit? Would it be the programmer, the machine, or the user who provided the initial parameters for the creation of the work? These questions still do not have definitive answers.

In Brazil, there is an important discussion about the use of images of artists who have already died in advertisements, such as the case of Elis Regina in the Volkswagen advertisement: the National Advertising Self-Regulation Council (CONAR) filed an ethical representation against the advertisement due to consumer complaints about respectability and fiction vs. reality.

IAG and the Future

Through all of this, IAG is redefining boundaries and ushering in a future where it will be an integral part of almost every aspect of our lives.

The capacity for innovation through AGI is democratizing creativity. As AI becomes more prevalent, the need for awareness and digital education also increases. Understanding how these systems work and how they can be used is an essential component for safe navigation.

It is essential to develop appropriate policies and regulations to ensure that AGI is used correctly: issues related to data privacy, security, fairness, and accountability need to be addressed to ensure that AGI is used in a way that benefits everyone, without increasing inequalities or harming individual rights.

Finally, as we prepare to welcome AGI into our future, we must also strive to shape that future in a way that respects human values and promotes the common good.
