Have you ever been worried about an important work meeting that came up at the last minute while a delivery was about to arrive? Or, for fear of the loss of your purchases, having to change plans just to be ready when the deliveryman interfered? Situations like this are part of the daily life of most Brazilian fans to buy in e-commerce.
According to recent information released by the Brazilian Electronic Commerce Association (ABComm), this market had an increase of 9.7% in 2024 compared to 2023, totaling R$ 44.2 billion in sales only in the first quarter of the year. The organization is expected to increase this number to R$ 205.11 billion by December. Faced with the warming of this niche, smart cabinets, also known as smart lockers (in english), emerge as an innovative solution to circumvent one of the main growth challenges of the sector.
The last mile, which is nothing more than the final stage of delivery in which the package goes from the distribution center to the final consumer, is one of the most complex and costly phases of the logistics chain of e-commerce, largely due to urban traffic and failures in delivery attempts, which usually happen two to three times during this process. In turn, the smart cabinet optimizes this dynamic by acting as a kind of intermediary, allowing objects to be delivered and removed autonomously in both residential and commercial complexes.
In terms of advantages that innovation brings to e-commerce logistics, we can highlight the reduction of operating costs. In cases of multiple deliveries, for example, the deliveryman can deposit all orders in a single stop, without having to depend on the presence of the customer, and thus avoiding having to return to that address. Here, there is a decrease in vehicle wear, in addition to reducing the need for temporary warehouses of goods located near the final consumer, allowing savings in rent and maintenance of these properties.
Another positive aspect of the use of smart lockers for e-commerce is the optimization of delivery time, since with the centralization of orders, there is a lower need for these professionals covering the same area, allowing more deliveries to be made in a single day.
In this context, security can also be cited as a benefit. After all, to withdraw the delivery you need a password sent on the mobile device of the buyer. Thus, the risk of breaking or theft of packages that are usually thrown at the door of the consumer is minimized, and e-commerce gains in reliability. Finally, sustainability is a relevant topic. Optimization of routes and reduction of delivery attempts reduce the emission of polluting gases and contribute to public welfare.
The truth is that in a country like Brazil, where e-commerce is on the rise, smart lockers are starting to emerge in a revolutionary way. As digital shopping continues to grow and the demand for more efficient and sustainable solutions increases, the trend is that these systems will spread quickly. The future will be connected and intelligent. We have no way to go back!
