Father's Day is the fourth most representative commemorative date in financial transactions in Brazilian retail. However, the period that heats up sales also attracts the attention of criminals. A recent survey by Serasa Experian reveals a worrying scenario: Brazil has registered more than 1 million fraud attempts per month, equivalent to one every 2.2 seconds.
This scenario of opportunity and risk requires entrepreneurs, both from physical stores and online, to redouble their attention to ensure safe transactions and avoid losses that go beyond the value of a sale. “O Dia dos Pais is a celebration that moves the economy in the second half. Therefore it is important that the entrepreneur focuses on providing the best experience for their customers, without worrying about scams. Security is an essential pillar to build a relationship of trust and retain the consumer”, says Lourdes Quintana, Superintendent of prevention of illicit acts of Getnet Brasil.
With that in mind, Getnet, a global payments fintech from the Santander group, has put together a series of security guidelines to help merchants protect their businesses and sell more securely during this time, both physically and digitally.
Tips for physical stores:
- Attention to Pix on the machine: always check your bank statement or application to see if the transaction amount via Pix was actually credited to your account before releasing the product.Do not rely only on the voucher presented by the customer, as it may be false.
- Beware of the blow of the machine exchange: be aware that, in a moment of distraction, your equipment is not exchanged for a scammer device, which would receive the values of your sales.
Be wary of unexpected technical visits: instruct your staff not to hand over equipment to alleged technicians who show up at the store without a prior appointment or an official contact from the payment company.
Tips for e-commerce:
- Monitor suspicious activity: keep an eye out for atypical behaviors, such as a single customer making multiple purchases with different cards in a short amount of time, or a large volume of orders to the same shipping address.
- Protect your customer data: use secure e-commerce platforms and invest in security certificates (SSL) to protect payment information and personal data of consumers.
- Beware of Chargeback on Payment Link: to avoid disputes, confirm that the identity of the buyer is the same as the cardholder before sending the product. In case of a dispute and chargeback, the merchant will need to have proof that the sale was made to the cardholder.Describe in detail the items on the invoice, store the proof of shipment and monitor transactions with suspicious behavior.
“High-motion dates like Father's Day require smart and secure operation. Tools that validate transactions in real time and protect the shopkeeper against fraud and chargebacks are essential. Investing in prevention is to ensure the financial health of the business and customer trust, resulting in more sales and loyalty.”.
