China advances generative AI and challenges Western leadership in image creation

Chinese startup DeepSeek announced in June the launch of Janus-Pro-7B, an artificial intelligence imaging model that, according to internal benchmarks, outperformed competitors such as OpenAI's DALL-E 3, and Stable Diffusion, from Stability AI. With 84.2% of precision in the DPG-Bench test, one of the main visual quality benchmarks, Janus-Pro-7B represents a leap in China's ability to compete with Silicon Valley in the generative AI segment.

The model has been trained with more than 90 million samples, combining real and synthetic data, and is available in versions with 1 billion and 7 billion parameters, which allows greater flexibility for companies and developers. The launch coincides with the growth of investments in AI by giants such as Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba, which have driven open source solutions and expanded the country's global competitiveness in the sector.

For Rafael Franco's, CEO of Alphacode, a company specialized in application development based in Sao Paulo, Curitiba and Orlando (USA), the Chinese advance in AI is a clear sign of change in the global dynamics of innovation.“Generative artificial intelligence has become one of the pillars of technological innovation, and the growth of China in this sector signals a future where the diversity of solutions will be even greater. This means that companies need to adapt quickly to integrate these new tools efficiently and strategically”, analyzes Franco.

In the United States, DeepSeek-V3 has become the most downloaded free app on the App Store, surpassing ChatGPT itself. This move highlights the global appeal of Chinese solutions and expands its presence in markets dominated until then by Western companies.

The arrival of models such as Janus-Pro-7B to the international market can generate relevant impacts in sectors such as graphic design, advertising and digital content production.“More efficient and accessible models open new possibilities, but require companies to know how to use these technologies to generate real value to users and businesses”, notes Franco.

The growth of Chinese generative AI also raises debates about regulation, technological sovereignty and cybersecurity, especially in the face of the opening of models to developers from different countries.By making cutting-edge technologies more accessible, DeepSeek and other Chinese startups promote a decentralization of innovation that can change the strategies of creative companies and advertising agencies, including in Brazil.

According to Franco, the challenge for Brazilian companies will be to find ways to integrate these technologies strategically, without losing control over safety, originality and local relevance.“A competitive advantage will be in the ability to adapt. The tools are available, but the differential will be how each company will apply them to its” ecosystem, concludes Rafael.
