A Marfrig, one of the global leaders in beef, pork and poultry production, and the largest producer of burgers in the world, offset 2,032 tons of plastic packaging and paper products consumed in Brazil in 2023, an increase of 49% compared to the year 2022 (1,363 tons). The compensation is carried out in partnership with the Brazilian government Rever Institute, entity responsible for approving cooperatives that do the sorting, packaging and directing of waste to return to the production chain, in addition to issuing recycling certificates.
Paulo Pianez, sustainability director at Marfrig, says that packaging compensation is an important part of the company's socio-environmental initiatives and the commitments Marfrig has made to mitigate the impact of its operations. “By means of reverse logistics we have been able to advance our strategy of ensuring end-to-end sustainability of the food production chain, as well as contributing to the professionalization of cooperatives and the generation of employment and income for workers in the field of STORH recycling.
Ricardo Pazzianotto, executive director of the Rever Institute, states that the “a partnership encourages reverse logistics of post-consumer packaging, ensures the legal compliance of Marfrig before state and national agencies, aligning with regulatory requirements and strengthening the socio-environmental responsibility of the company”.
Erika Goncalves, legal representative of the Eco Guarulhos Recycling Work Cooperative, one of the partner entities of the ecosystem, explains that the partnership brings more security, allowing the cooperative to schedule the necessary investments with greater confidence and flexibility. “This freedom of investment allows the application of training, the purchase of equipment and the improvement of the capacity of receiving and sorting of our” cooperative.
Reverse logistics: this is a set of activities that includes collecting, transporting and properly disposing of products and materials discarded by society (such as food packaging SO to be reused, recycled or disposed of in a safe and environmentally responsible way. The waste is reused by the manufacturing industries themselves or directed for use in other production cycles, with another final destination.
