75% of Brazilian professionals are considering changing jobs

According to a new study by LinkedIn, the world’s largest professional social network, 75% of Brazilian professionals surveyed are considering changing jobs in 2024. This data reflects a significant shift in the job market, at a time when the unemployment rate in Brazil is also undergoing important changes, as indicated by the study by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) which showed that unemployment rose to 7.9% in the first quarter of 2024.

The career and business consultant at ESIC, Alexandre Weiler, explains that a career transition is the process that involves changing from one profession to another, which can happen when a professional graduates or works in a specific field, but over time feels motivated to work in a different field. ‘The transition can be planned or happen naturally, due to promotions or internal selection processes in the company where the person works. In the case of a planned career transition, it is essential to reflect on some key issues such as the real motivation for this change, whether it is necessary to specialize, if the issue lies with the current work environment or the profession, among other important questions that provide a comprehensive analysis of the professional,’ he states.

Once the motivation for a career transition is identified, it is essential to take action, starting with updating your resume and LinkedIn profile to reflect your recent skills, experiences, and accomplishments. “Networking remains one of the most effective strategies for finding new job opportunities, so participate in events, connect with colleagues in the profession, and expand your network of contacts. Additionally, it is crucial to research the job market in your field to identify which companies are hiring, what the trends are, and which skills are in high demand, allowing you to better prepare for interviews and strategically position yourself,” says Weiler

Success story: from law to sales

Sandro Wuicik, now the commercial director and co-founder of Market4u, is an example of a career change, as the previously successful lawyer in his career shifted to entrepreneurship and sales, where he found new opportunities for growth and fulfillment. “I realized that my skills in argumentation and negotiation were perfectly applicable in sales. It was an initial challenge, but today I feel more fulfilled and see a promising future in my new career,” shares Sandro.

The entrepreneur explains that during the transition process, especially the decision, was not easy. “I had graduated, passed the Bar exam, built a career in sports, which I was passionate about, but felt that something was missing.”

It was then that Sandro received an invitation to join his brother-in-law, Eduardo, who was already an entrepreneur. “I switched from law to entrepreneurship because I saw a greater purpose, knew the positive impact that entrepreneurship could have on the lives of millions of people,” he says.

There were a few companies created, some succeeded, some did not, until reaching the business model of market4u, today the largest microfranchise in Brazil and the largest network of autonomous markets in Latin America.

Career consultant tips from ESIC International, Alexandre Weiler, to change careers

1 – Evaluate your motivations

Before making any decision, it is important to understand why you want to change jobs. Ask yourself if it is a matter of dissatisfaction with the current environment, seeking new challenges, better financial conditions, or other personal reasons. Having clarity about your motivations will help you make a more assertive decision.

2 – Know your professional goals

Changing the course of your career becomes easier when you know where you are going. You may want to have your own business, start in a completely different area, or move up two positions in your current company. The important thing is to have clarity about where you want to go and what your short, medium, and long-term goals are. This will allow you to make an effective plan and maintain your motivation.

3 – Update your resume and LinkedIn profile

With 75% of professionals considering a change, it is essential that your resume and LinkedIn profile are up to date and reflect your skills, experiences, and recent accomplishments. Use relevant keywords from your field to increase the visibility of your profile.

4 – Network

Networking continues to be one of the most effective ways to find new job opportunities. Attend events, connect with professional colleagues, and use LinkedIn to expand your network. Often, the best opportunities are not publicly advertised and come through referrals.

5 – Research the market

Learn about the job market in your field. Identify which companies are hiring, what the trends are, and which skills are in high demand. This will allow you to better prepare for interviews and position yourself more strategically.

6 – Consider long-term growth

When considering a new opportunity, think about your long-term growth. Inquire about development and promotion possibilities within the company, and whether the organizational culture aligns with your values and career goals.

7 – Take care of mental health

Changing jobs can be a stressful process. It is important to take care of your mental health during this transition. Engage in activities that help reduce stress, such as physical exercise, meditation, or hobbies you enjoy.
