Bárbara Espir Becomes the First Woman to Lead a Cryptocurrency Company in Brazil

Bitso, a Latin American company providing cryptocurrency-based financial services, announced today the appointment of Bárbara Espir as the new Country Manager for Brazil. This appointment marks a historic moment as Espir becomes the first woman to lead a cryptocurrency company in the country.

Espir, who previously held the position of VP of Legal Latam, was the first Brazilian hired by Bitso in 2019. Her journey in the company includes expansion into Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil, as well as involvement in investment rounds and strategic partnerships.

“It is an honor and a privilege to lead this company that I admire so much,” declared Espir. “I am extremely proud of our talented team of Bitsonauts here in Brazil.”

The appointment comes at a time of significant growth for Bitso in Brazil. In the first half of this year, the company recorded an 18% increase in its user base, surpassing 1.8 million people. In the business segment, Bitso Business tripled the number of active institutional clients in 2023.

Espir takes on the mission to continue the local expansion of the company and strengthen the Bitso Business segment, which provides payment infrastructure to international companies looking to operate in the Brazilian market in a regulated manner and connected to PIX.

“Brazil is one of the largest crypto markets in the world,” stated Espir. “Today Bitso is in a unique position in terms of regulatory coverage, liquidity, security, and connection to local payment systems in all the countries where we operate.”

In addition to her role at Bitso, Espir is a member of the Advisory Board of Vivalá and holds degrees from Insper and Stanford Law School. She replaces Thales Freitas, who left the company.
