Febraban data showed that transactions made via Pix had a 61% increase in the first semester of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year. There were R$ 29 billion transacted in the first semester of this year. The number, in fact, exceeded other forms of payment such as credit cards, debit cards, prepaid, boleto, TED, and check.
“It is a payment method that brings a lot of ease and speed to everyday life and has indeed become popular among Brazilians. Therefore, we see the number of transactions increasing,” says the specialist.
Another novelty regarding Pix is that Banco do Brasil has already launched Pix by proximity in partnership with Cielo. Now, bank customers can make purchases by approaching their cell phone to the machine in establishments that have been enabled. Initially, the service will be available only to a selected group of customers in Brasília and São Paulo, as part of a pilot program. Officially, the feature should be launched nationwide starting February 2025.
Starting from November 1st, new rules and limits for Pix will also take effect to increase transaction security. Devices that have never had a transfer using this payment method will have a limit of R$ 200 per Pix and a maximum daily limit of R$ 1,000.
Therefore, the idea is to prevent scammers from making transactions using a new victim’s device. It will be necessary for users to make a prior registration with the financial institution to make high-value transactions.
According to the Central Bank, this measure prevents scammers from making high-value transactions even with the victim’s login and password from a new cell phone or computer. Therefore, whoever decides to buy a new device, change numbers, or use a new Pix key will need to register with the financial institution they are using. The new requirement only applies to new devices to be accessed and not to smartphones and devices that are already used for Pix transactions.
According to Idean Alves, a financial planner, these measures are essential to increase user security and confidence in the payment method.
“The main objective of the measures is indeed to increase security to benefit the user. This is also how the number of criminal actions related to Pix is reduced. So it is a great victory for the user, without a doubt”, Idean states.
