Equifax BoaVista research reveals that in 2024, there was an increase of 3.5% in fraud attempts in e-commerce, compared to 2023, which recorded nearly 7 million fraud attempts. The average ticket for purchases was R$ 343.90.
The data indicates that the average ticket for fraud attempts increased by 18.1% compared to the same period last year, which recorded R$ 291.17, versus R$ 343.90 in 2024.
On the national level, the study reveals that 27.5% of fraud attempts, more than 2.2 million, occurred in Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo. In contrast, Acre, Amapá, and Roraima are the states with the lowest fraud rates, representing only 0.2% of cases.
Specializing in developing solutions that help e-commerce and payment methods combat fraud at all stages of the purchasing process online, Equifax BoaVista reports that its anti-fraud products prevented losses of approximately R$ 84.5 billion in e-commerce.
One finding from the research concerns the days of the week with the highest incidence of fraud attempts: 15.1% occurred on Fridays, which is the day with the highest number of sales, when 15.9% of the 35 million online transactionstake place. The peak time for fraud was at 2 PM, while the lowest occurrence was observed during 4h the early morning hours. During the weekend, especially on Sundays, sales and fraud attempts are lower, accounting for 11.3%.
Despite this, ‘the data shows us the most frequent behavioral patterns of fraudsters, who tend to act during peak e-commerce hours to blend in with legitimate transactions, making detection more difficult. This reinforces the importance of e-commerce companies investing in monitoring and prevention technology, keeping pace with the advancements of fraudsters themselves,’ highlights Rogério Signorini, Vice President of Products and Pre-Sales at Equifax BoaVista.
