Kaspersky launches the “Who Calls” app in Brazil to combat unwanted calls

Kaspersky announces the availability of the Who Calls mobile app in Brazil, a solution aimed at protecting smartphone users from the growing wave of spam and phone call fraud. It is estimated that actions by Anatel have already prevented more than 184.9 billion unwanted calls between June 2022 and December 2024. In this context, the app will help people identify and block unknown or potential scam calls, including on WhatsApp.

Brazil faces nearly 5,000 attempted mobile attacks per day in 2024, and phone calls are a common avenue for traps that don’t use malware. According to preliminary data from Kaspersky Who Calls, in the first five months of testing the solution, fraudulent calls rose from 2.19% in the first month (November 2024) to 10.12% in the fifth (March 2025). Unwanted calls increased from 37.26% to 59.27%.

In Brazil, there is an excess of commercial and advertising calls—so much so that there are actions aimed at blocking these excesses by Anatel, but there are also many scams, primarily financially motivated. With Kaspersky Who Calls, we have a proactive digital shield for people to block both types of calls. With our artificial intelligence, we can quickly learn and identify new formats of unwanted calls and scams, turning people’s experience into a conscious decision. We want Brazilians to regain control of their communication without compromising their security“, says Leonardo Castro, Kaspersky’s e-commerce director for Latin America.

How Kaspersky Who Calls Works

Kaspersky Who Calls uses artificial intelligence (AI) and user feedback to identify, classify, and block spam and fraudulent calls. When receiving a call from an unknown number, the app displays the number’s reputation (indicates if the number is already known as spam), the company category (type of activity), and the organization name.

The app also allows customers to report suspicious numbers to the database, ensuring these calls are automatically blocked in the future.

The free version of Kaspersky Who Calls offers essential call identification and blocking features. The Premium version (R$19.90 per year) expands protection with functionalities such as:

  • WhatsApp Call IdentificationIdentifies and blocks spam and unwanted calls on WhatsApp, displaying information about the caller (e.g., bank or market research company).
  • Call Blocking by Category: Allows blocking calls from specific categories of unwanted numbers.
  • Outgoing Call ProtectionAlerts the user before completing a call to a number identified as spam.
  • Offline Mode: Informs and alerts about suspicious calls even without an internet connection, using offline databases stored on the phone.

For Android phone owners, the Premium version also offers blocking calls from foreign countries and numbers not in the contact list, as well as protection against SMS phishing.
