Half of executives are off LinkedIn: what are the risks?

Being disconnected in an increasingly digital market seems unlikely, but it’s the reality for half of executives. Recent data from an FGV survey revealed that 45% of CEOs are absent from LinkedIn, the social network with the highest presence of C-suite professionals with career profiles—something extremely detrimental to securing future opportunities and positive career progression.

The same study also found that only 5% of the analyzed CEOs are highly active on LinkedIn, with more than 75 posts annually. The others appear sporadically on the platform, which certainly may compromise their visibility and appeal for better positions. After all, this platform is now considered one of the largest global showcases for the job market, functioning as a worldwide, constantly updated database that optimizes and speeds up professional recruitment.

In terms of employability, the social network serves as an active resume, where frequent posts about industry topics aren’t strictly necessary—but highlighting one’s experiences, major achievements, and career goals is essential. Those who aren’t visible there will likely remain off recruiters’ radars, as they use the platform to search for candidates matching desired profiles for specific job openings.

LinkedIn itself shared that 65% of Brazilian users leverage the platform to apply for jobs, and for ¼ of the national population, it’s considered the primary tool for this purpose. Strategically, executives should keep their profiles updated to stay on recruiters’ radars and stand out for opportunities that advance their careers.

A strong LinkedIn profile must always be up-to-date, showcasing not only past roles and accurate tenure dates but also key deliverables, career projections, and the professional path being built. This information should align with career aspirations to avoid frustration when applying for roles requiring unattained skills or experience.

Ensure your profile is complete and consistent with your trajectory and goals so recruiters searching for relevant talent can find you through keywords matching your resume. Proven experience will be crucial in assessing competencies and evaluating compatibility between employer and candidate.

Rather than passively waiting for contacts, proactive professionals pursue desired career positions—applying directly instead of expecting opportunities to come to them. This approach creates an attractive differentiator that boosts visibility and hiring chances.

If despite these efforts you see no positive response, seek guidance from specialized consultants who can diagnose issues and help you stand out for future opportunities. Chances abound on this ever-growing platform—one that ambitious professionals can’t afford to neglect.
